I was just talking off the cuff, I hadn't looked at any list, but I am surprised at how deep the list is.
I suppose Adam probably could have run a minute faster if he was actually racing. From what I was told he seemed to be sticking to a certain pace, he finished strong and didn't look too beat up afterwards.
Btw, I think the 1:05 OTQ is a little week comparatively; I think a half-M on a flat course translates more to a 10K than it does to a marathon. Some of your top NCAA XC runners could probably run a 1:05 half, but how many of them could run a 2:15 marathon? In a half, you can focus just on running, you don't have to worry about the physiological stuff like hydration and energy.
You don't need a 2:15 marathon - just sub 2:19, and I'd venture to say quite a few of the best college X-C runners can hit that mark.

A sub 1:05 half and having never run a marathon? I'd say he's a huge underdog and would not put him in the top 10 on paper, even if he did finish.
Adam wasn't racing? Bullshit! If he could have run a minute faster or knew he had it in the bank with 5 miles to go, he would have raced his ass off. Adam did everything he could to break 1:05 and hats off to him, but call a spade a spade and stop with the excuses. That was not an easy run for him.

I'm sure Sagarin is aware, but doesn't consider what Goucher has been doing to be a "monster base." He has worked up to 100 miles a week of low-intensity work. Compare that to the base of all the other contenders at the trials, and it doesn't seem so monstrous.

I wouldn't go so far as to call a 1:05 half soft (it's a significantly tougher mark than 2:19) but it is very achievable for a good college 10k runner. What is interesting is that fully one-third of the qualifiers for the men's trials have NEVER RUN A MARATHON! That's right, a third of the guys out there (including Goucher) will be taking their first stab at the distance in Houston. I find it interesting that most of the sub 1:05 guys, having run their half qualifiers to get in, think it would be better preparation to continue running halfs and 10ks to get ready for the trials as opposed to actually trying a marathon this fall. I guess we'll see how it works out for them. My guess is we will see a bunch of DNFs and dramatic blowups from rookies going out too fast in January.
He did say that. He also said he was going to run by feel (without watch or looking at the splits). Clearly he ran by feel and it did not come close to the 1:03 pr he'd mentioned the week before. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say. I'm rooting for him to run well. I'd be really surprised if he can pull off an olympic spot by january, but its a great injury come back story anyway.

He doesn't need any more of a base than that. All it would take are a few months of that type of mileage, which he has done, and he would be back to the aerobic monster that he was. What he needs to focus on, then, is LT, AT, and pace work while maintaining a decent enough level of mileage. If he pushes up to 120+ while trying to crush hard workouts he will injure himself again, he can't help it.

LT, AT, and "pace work" would be considered monstrous itself compared to what he has been doing.
He needs to be careful and deliberate either way. Too much of the stuff you're suggesting is why he gets injured to begin with. If he can only handle 100-110, fine, but he can run it more up-tempo, double up with the alter-G, and only sharpen late in the game so he doesn't get injured. My guess is he could handle higher mileage with less of the crap you're suggesting for a few months, then sharpen up.

Are you out of your mind? This is completely un-notable. A guy with his credentials should be able to run 1:04:50 and any day of the week, by himself, in a rainstorm, hungover, with 2 hours sleep, for christsakes!. This is a horrible result.

How are you missing what's right in front of your face? He doesn't need "higher mileage," he ran sub-1:05 off of just easy mileage with his wife. Nobody is saying he should get down to the track to hammer quarters for two hours. Tempo runs will injure Goucher? Uh, yeah.
