What are some good ones?

Alternative is kind of a meaningless term in music at this point, but....how about "Lucky Man" and "Space and Time" by The Verve?
"Look, I Just Don't Like You" by Piebald
There is no such thing as alternative rock any longer. It's either called "new rock", "rap-metal", or my favorite, "crap". When nearly every song is a variation on the theme "I'm 20, I'm Rich, I'm in a Band - My Life Sucks!" it just becomes very uninteresting.
And no one knows how to play guitar anymore.
anything by Division of Laura lee
You might want to listen to some of these bands;
The Pixies
Husker Du
The Smiths
Liz Phair
Ocean Blue
Old 97s
Anything by Coheed and Cambria.
ANYTHING by Piebald will do. Pick up "If Life Hands You Lemons" "If It Weren't for Venetian Blinds, It'd Be Curtains For Us All" "We Are The Only Friends That We Have" (which Look... is off of) and their soon to be released "All Ears, All Eyes, All The Time." Get any one of these and enjoy.

you sir, have immaculate taste! ;) throw in Gene and Suede and we have pretty good festival lineup
I like that Steely Dan band.
Liz Phair?
My general rule is that if someone's song is being played for the NCAA women's basketball tournament commercials, they are no longer alternative!
Portland Runner, there are plenty of great "alternative" bands out there. You're right that they aren't getting any attention, and you're also right that a lot of the stuff that is popular is really lousy, but you just have to look a little harder these days.
To the Piebald fan, have you seen them live? Great show!
The Mars Volta
Modest Mouse
Wilco
Liz Phair has been around for over a decade. She recently cashed in. I say good for her. I haven't listened to Phair's latest album, but apparently it's a little more commercial. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, really. An artist has a right to cash in while they're still marketable/or in Phair's case, finally marketable. Again, that doesn't take away anything from the songs she wrote before.
(Off topic, do you consider the NCAA women's tournament an overly commercialized event? It's not unless you happen to be a lesbian (nothing wrong with that as lesbians are definitely alternative), or your daughter plays for UCONN. Can you name anyone else who sold out to the Women's NCAA?).
Joseph Heller (Catch 22) was criticized when he sold the movie rights to the book. Heller still defends his decision to take the money. The movie took nothing away from the book, just as this last album doesn't diminish the powerful lyrics in a song like "Fuck and Run."
Lastly, a lot of elite track runners cash in at the end of their careers. The money on the roads is a little easier to come by than on the track. The same shelf life exists for artists as athletes. People cash in when they know the end is near. It's easy to judge, but a true fan can cut some slack.

Fuck and Run
I woke up alarmed
I didn't know where I was at first
Just that I woke up in your arms
And almost immediately I felt sorry
'Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who tries to win you over?
And whatever happened to a boyfriend
The kind of guy who makes love 'cause he's in it?
And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that boring old shit like letters and sodas
Letters and sodas
You got up out of bed
You said you had a lot of work to do
But I heard the rest in your head
And almost immediately I felt sorry
'Cause I didn't think this would happen again
No matter what I could do or say
Just that I didn't think this would happen again
With or without my best intentions
And I want a boyfriend
I want a boyfriend
I want all that stupid old shit like letters and sodas
And I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend another year alone
It's f*** and run, f*** and run
Even when I was seventeen
Fuck and run, f*** and run
Even when I was twelve
And I can feel it in my bones
I'm gonna spend my whole life alone
It's f*** and run, f*** and run
Even when I was seventeen
Fuck and run, f*** and run
Even when I was twelve
You almost felt bad
You said that I should call you up
But I knew much better than that
And almost immediately you felt sorry
'Cause you didn't think this would happen again
No matter what you could do or say
Just that you didn't think this would happen again
Without or without your best intentions
And whatever happened to a girlfriend
The kind of chick who tries to win you over?
