Doesn't KK have an altitude tent and go through altitude periods?

That is the truth. You lose it within 18 days from coming down anyway. Plus, there are no PERMANENT POSITIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES associated with training at altitude. Even for an extended amount of time.
I think the majority of Morris' improvements could be due to the fact that he I ran over 100 miles a week for three years. That was done at sea-level in Japan along with marathon distance tempo runs of 40-45 (again at sea level). I know that the Honda team had a training camp in Boulder in the summers and they were running around 130+/wk there. The fact is, when he came back (after Chicago) and started to train again at altitude, the results were not as impressive.
40 to 45 kilometers that is.
Khalid Knoucchi (NY) 2:05 tent
Alan Culpepper (CO) 2:09:41 Chicago 2002 yea pretty sure he has run a couple times in the mountains
this is just what I noticed skimming through the list
I bet there are others like this

Did KK have an altitude tent before he became WR holder? The answer is NO.

I'll bet you're a fool.
Morris? wrote:

Take Morris and Bjorklund off the altitude list. BJ moved to Boulder after 1980.
Most of that list is NOT HiA trained. Also let's not forget other Sea-Level trained good runners like Mark Conover, Steve Spence, Keith Brantly.
How about using top 50 performers of all time instead? I'd bet a very large majority of them are altitude trained.
Take Morris off the list? I ran with him in Boulder July '99 when he was putting in very intense base work for Chicago. And why would KK need a tent when he spent part of his marathon buildup in Albuquerque? Spence spent the summers in Boulder for many years and was there right before he won Columbus '90. I could keep going. The one thing they all have in common is periodizing time at altitude rather than being a permanent resident.

Majority are BORN at altitude. That is a factor in their success among many others. The majority of our marathon hopefuls who are not born at altitude need to focus their attention on basics. Altitude training is a minor factor to consider for these folks.
KK spends a lot of time in Abq., just like the wms marathon record holder Paula Radcliff.

Did KK spend a lot of time at altitude before he first set the WR? NO!

Being born at altitude doesn't help Peruvians, Mongolians or Nepalese does it? Most of those top 50 all-time come from one tribe in Kenya, the Kikiyus, who only represent 10 percent of Kenya's population. If being born at altitude were important then how come the other 90 percent of Kenya's population produce ZIP when it comes to running?

Perhaps they have not run thousands of miles.

YES
It does seem strange that while there have been world-class cyclists from Colombia, there has not been a single world-class runner.
Add Chris Fox. I know he trained in Boulder before his big 10k adn all, but I think that was mainly chasing girl business...
Not quite sub 2:09, I know, but low altitude elite American.
