OP,
What textbook and who's the author? I had a math prof in college who was a running geek and wondering if it could be him.

Our school district started the semester on 8/8. Our "summer school" was finished in early July.

You're missing the obvious,
Could be a college student retaking a math class because he got hammered on the thirsty Thursdays before his Friday exams, over slept them all, teacher refused make ups, and had to withdraw.
Because it is not like I posted earlier in this thread saying that my school year (college) has already started or anything....
And for those asking which textook it is: "Calculus - Single and Multivariable, 5th edition, Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, McCallum, et al."
Ha. The old "Harvard calculus" book. I taught from that at UM-Ann Arbor not too long ago. It casts a wide net in search of "real-life" examples -- glad it caught Bekele.
He could be in a year-round high school.
does that book offer anything interesting on calculus analysis of the kennster's run ?
anything more than just talking domains ?

Cool. I do some math/science teaching on a volunteer basis for local elementary schools and often use Flo-Jo\'s 10.49 to explain distance, time, speed, and the associated calculations.
Don\'t forget to add the juice ;-)
Just kidding (well, not really), but I think its a great idea for a topic at school. Maybe updat it for Bolt since the kids seem to like him a lot.
And thanks for the original post, very cool

Ventolin, based on your calculations on predicting races, you have no say in this thread. You suck at math.
i'm only quoting from :
51.20 / 1'47.50 -> 3'30.23 , 4'45.60 , 7'19.59 , 12'36.15 , 26'16.05
or
51.40 / 1'47.80 -> 3'30.63 , 4'46.02 , 7'20.00 , 12'36.37 , 26'15.24
or
51.60 / 1'48.10 -> 3'31.02 , 4'46.44 , 7'20.41 , 12'36.59 , 26'14.44
not sure which line to look at
how quick was he for 1500 in '04 or '05 ??
if calculus offers better & i re-read the calculus section in gullberg's book,
where do i subscribe !!!
Why do you use those in every thread? Nobody cares
I agree.

what the. it's a textbook. take your calculator and chill out.

why ??
because we dont care..its not real.
OP, thanks for posting this. Personally I find this run so impressive, so out of this world, that it's difficult to make the accomplishment seem concrete. One way is to calculate his average pace at various intervals- his average kilometer is 157.753 seconds, making his average 1500 time 3:56.6, and of course he ran 6 2/3 of them. Another metric is that he crossed 8k in 21:04.
A fun thought experiment, inspired by the Mario Kart 64 thing where you could race against the ghost of your own best race: how long could you hang with Bekele in this race in your peak condition? If I trained for many months, I might be able to hang on for that 2:37 first kilometer. Right now, I'd be out at 600 meters.
