O'Shaughnessy's run was in Columbia, MO.

Niall wasn't in Columbia in 1977, and you are right, indoor track was built after I graduated in '82. Waigwa in June of '76 wouldn't have been Columbia, or Clemson, or Charleston. Must be WV, and Mizz.

Waigwa's 3:58 was probably at Columbia U at NYC Games held for a few years in June.

You may want to check into old Baptist College (currently Charleston Southern) results. I think that they had some sub 4 runners back in the days. I think that their school records are not right since the ones listed in their media guised are not too stout. Jim Settle coached there during their glory days. Irv Batten ran there. He owns On The Run in Mt. Pleasant. He may have some results. His e-mail is on his website:

Herrington was cool. He had pretty good speed, and he was able to watch his competitors and look for his friends in the stands at the same time.

The early portion of his development was messed up by a knee injury after a bad spill during a 1500m in Canada, but he delivered the goods at the collegiate, national and international level as a versatile 800/1500 man who could kick off of just about any pace.

so far, i have several road miles under 4 at the King Street Mile in 1984 (Phil "Tiny" Kane and Roger Jones in 1984) and more in years subsequent.

but no track miles.

i am checking with Baptist/Southern, but i don't believe they would have had a June track meet in 1976 at the college.

marty flynn (ray's brother) apparently ran a 4:00.90 indoors at clemson on their nasty track at littlejohn coliseum. anywhere else and it would have been sub-4.

How can South Carolina have never had a sub 4 minute mile? I understand why Montana and North Dakota haven't (altitude, low populations, lowly collegiate scene, etc.). South Carolina is populous, at sea-level, and has several large and highly competitive colleges (University of South Carolina, Clemson). Not only that but several schools within 500 miles of SC have had sub four milers in the past, UNC, Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech, NC State, Duke just to name a few big schools.

Is this just a track anomaly or why hasn't a sub four been run is SC yet? Any other states without sub 4's that should have one?

Herrington ran 1500s that would equal sub 4s, if you believe in those types of conversions. And Clemson had at least one guy do it outside the state.

USC has no men's cross country and doesn't really have quality distance runners any more. Clemson has been extremely strong in distance in the past at 5k, 10k, but few middle distance guys.

Clemson built it's new track in the early 1990s, before that it was a cinder track. I don't know when USC built there's, but that may have been a problem. I don't know if they've hosted SEC or ACC meets.

Plus, not many outdoor miles are run anymore.

USC's school record for the mile is something like 4:08, clemson's is sub-4, but indoor:

Distance running is far behind here. No prep girl has ever broken 5 in the mile, and only two under 11:00 at 3200. winning boys track times this year were 4:19/9:31.

Times have been a lot faster than that during the season. You are looking at one meet when it was over 100 degrees on the track.

yeah. i was there.

i've looked at 100s of times, compile a list of top times of 12 upstate counties, and been to 20+ meets this year alone.

compared to dozens of other states, S.C. is far below par and candice, katie, angelina and ryan and reid and the like don't make the state good.

It's unfortunate but true that collegiate distance running hasn't developed as much in some southeastern states as in many parts of the U.S. I know that the Univ. of Georgia has not had a sub-4:00 miler (but has had a sub-4:00 1,500m equiv.) and I'm doubtful about GA Tech. But look at what happened after the Atlanta Olympics: Olympic Stadium converted into Turner Field for the wonderful Braves; the Olympic warm-up track, a state-of-the-art facility, left to deteriorate with no one caring for it. Atlanta had the USATF indoor for 7 or 8 years but the people just didn't show up (despite valiant efforts by the Atlanta Track Club and others) and the Georgia Dome was just too vast for a national championship meet with fewer than 10,000 spectators seem anything but pathetic. Maybe we can blame much of this on FOOTBALL, which is king down in these parts. I wish things were different.

all the best male high schoolers in recent years have done nothing much in college.

although the s.c. girls did have two footlocker finalists this year, which was quite an accomplishment for this small state. things may be looking up.

compared to n.c., ga., fla., we lag.

googling isn't working for me.

and i've made more than 25 calls and a dozen e-mails today, including those schools, but still can't locate them.

although i have found tiny's ex- missy kane, and left her a message. and left messages at UTEP and Charleston Southern, where Waigwa may have gone when it was Baptist College.

For as small as our state is, that is pretty good.

Also, look at the 4x800. South Carolina is making tremendous strides considering that 3 girls teams and 4 guys teams all broke the state record.
