I've read on this board a nice rule of thumb for structuring a sample training week: run long should not exceed 25% of weekly mileage, or some say 2 hours in length, or 20 miles. Whichever comes first.
I got injured during marathon training the first and second time. I however ran the marathon the second on 3 weeks training after a 7 weeks layoff to experience it, and I actually had a good time (ran 3:50 jogging, the initial goal was 3:10 but that was obviously out of the question).
I want to run a 2nd marathon to build the experience, this time 'solid'. Not all out or optimal because i dont have the mileage necessary (I recently touched 40mpw). I want to max out this year at 50 mpw (1st yr was 30, 2nd was 40).
So with 50 mpw and the rule above that makes it 12.5 miles which is not enough. Hanson plan goes to 16 which might be too much on 50.
Any advice? I was thinking on doing 2 medium long runs back to back Sat-Sun of 10 miles each, first one easy, second all 10 miles at MP. And alternating that weekend with progressive long run of 10-12 or maybe 14? With the last 4-6 at MP or slightly faster.
I know this is not ideal, but I'd like to semi-train once, and then next year go for sub 3 on about 60mpw.
Thoughts?
If the above is not enough...would a 10 day training cycle with 1 longer run of 16-18 make more sense?
Thanks in advance
