Man, what a finish. I thought for sure El G was going to get it. I'd never seen this race before until now.

This was a great race to bring up again, Brojos - thanks for that!
1.52 mid for the last 800 leader to leader - El Gerrouj really made a push to the front with 2 to go, but isn't this what he did all the time in the 1500? He must have thought it would work again at 5k, and his 2 splits at the start-line in the last km were 60.x and 57-low.
I think the moves that put Kipchoge into a winning position were 1) a little surge at the bell to pass Bekele and go into second behind El Gerrouj and 2) the timing of his finish - he did not push too early when El Gerrouj increased the gap slightly with just less than 300m to go
That was amazing - tactics and sheer strength. If the race finished in 12.52, the 4th km must have been the slowest at 243(typical for champs finals, I guess) and then they went almost 20s faster for the last km.
I wonder where all these tactics have gone, and why everyone continues to play into Mo Farah's hands. While I think Farah can definitely handle a 152 last half mile at a decent pace (not at sub-13pace, but certainly 1310ish) he does it with sustained speed over the last lap especially (60-53). I wonder how he would fare with someone really pushed with 800 to go.
You really don't think Farah could close a sub 13 race in 1:52? He ran his PR of 12:53 with a 53 FLAT last lap.
Much like Tergat and Geb finish from Atlanta. Riveting.
Great videos and post -- thanks for bringing it back in light of Kipchoge's recent 2:04 at Berlin (just missed out on 2:03). He's amazing!
