For the record, my Freshman year I ran my first 5K in 26:52. I had run Fun-Runs before this in faster times, but due to interest in other sports I lost interest in running, lacked aerobic capacity and was very out of shape going into my Freshman year.
However, I worked hard and wanted to be good. I was passionate about running and knew I used to be a solid runner, so I had potential.
I finished my Freshman XC Season running 20:34. My sophomore year I came back and finished the season with an 18:59. I also posted a 4:59 in the mile with an injury. I'm now going into my Junior Year as a Top 10 runner on my school's team with my sights set on running under 17:30 and hopefully making Varsity.
Had Coach made a cut-off at 23 minutes I wouldn't have made the team and I probably wouldn't have gotten back into running. So you're tellin' me, that anybody who can't run sub-23 right off the bat should be cut? I wouldn't be where I am today if that was the answer.
Lastly, if a coach is planning on doing cuts like that, he should make sure everybody is well aware before the season starts. Make the Time Trial the Second Week and give new runners the chance to get into shape, because I know I knew nothing about our school's Cross Country team because I recieved none of the emails. Any info. I got was from a friend who was already in high school and on the team. It would be unfair for a Freshman interested in running but who has no clue when practices begin or that there will be a time trial, to get cut. They need to be informed so they at least have the opportunity to build a base.
