Runnerspace is ALL over it! Thanks.
i am absolutely on the same page as you guys. when anyone runs a 12:53 in high school besides an african, let me know. And who did he get beat by in the 2 mile today?? Bernard Lagat and Edwin Soi...both damn good runners.
Good old Letsrun strikes again.
Yesterday: Why is LV in the 2-mile? He won't get any help at all falling off the back of the pack.
Today: His record was way too aided to count.

This was not a downhill or wind-aided race.
Thanks for clearing that up. I was under the mistaken impression that they were running on the M.C. Escher Track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7kdOQBKRGgI got him at 5:15.6 for 2000m. It's obviously tougher to see the 3000m split, but it's safe to say that he beat that one too...
Maybe this is what GF needed to get his head back into it.
Only on this craphole of a message board could a HS kid run under 8:30 for 2 mi and have a series of nitwits try and verbalize why it wasn't really all that good.
Amazing race... saw him run at NXN and was very impressed by how fluid and powerful he looked despite mid-shin-mud. Today, blown away by how good he looked on the track. Excellent!
A bunch of "adults" arguing over which high-schooler deserves the record is absolutely pathetic.
Okay. Well, you could also say that German had four years of high school to develop and progress when Lukas had only 3 years.
Also, Lukas's age is that of a normal high school senior. Just because Fernandez happened to be one of the younger ones in his class isn't something you can use against Lukas.

Well German did set his 5000 AJR not leading at USATF's.
Great run by LV. But as a "semi-purist", I do have to take off "points" for him not really running "high school track" as far as dual meets, leagues, sections, state champs. ALL the record holders before him ran a "real" high school season.
There is something to be said about helping your TEAM win a league, section, or state championship; AND jumping in a (pro) race and hitting a fast time.
You forget that Lukas was (is) triathlete, and he ran track on his spare time from triathlon training. And over all, blaming athlete for not running "high school track" is pointless, as long distance running is personal event, and high school team in no way could or will help him run faster.

Don't sell yourself short. You're not a "semi purist"...you're a "purist" as in a pure nitwit.

To sound more like a "nitwit"...
Well that's my point--that it's a little tougher when you run for your school team as opposed to just for yourself and having your training and your schedule completely personalized for you (like a pro).
In the end, the ends justifies the means. 8:29 is what will be etched forever in the record books (not all these nit picky arguments of his season, his personal rabbit, his age, his nationality, etc.).
You also forget that Lukas had every intention to run with his team in Illinois for the track season, until the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) said that you would lose eligibility at your high school for track if you ran New Balance Indoor Nationals (awful decision by the IHSA). Lukas did not want to give up that opportunity and so he decided not to run for his high school. Since he had no other races he took to the opportunity to get the feel for races with the pros. Honestly, can you blame him? He is not afraid to lose or be lapped (Indoor 2mile against Bernard Lagat) and I believe that is honorable. He is sticking his nose into what he wants his future to be which I respect. He understands that you learn more from losing than winning. Honestly, It was great to see Jack Driggs win the 1600 and 3200 in Illinois instead of Lukas (even though Lukas is my hero) since it meant so much more to Driggs and it was his first state championship. Lukas has always seemed like a great guy and he is a role model to so many. Everyone I know who has meant him says that he is done to earth and kind. If Bernard Lagat was proud of him after the race, than I think everyone on Letsrun.com can be proud too, and can encourage the next generation, not discourage. Honestly, you are all doing a disservice to American distance running by not supporting the potential that we have. Instead, support a healthy kid that is trying to live his dream (and a great friend- he is derailing his dream to a Triathlon championship for his friend who was diagnosed with cancer).
this thread is sickening. verzbicas clearly broke the record. how can anyone dispute this? numbers don't lie. and people on here really need to get off german's nuts. WHAT THE EFF HAS HE DONE RECENTLY IN COLLEGE...(CRICKET, CRICKET). NOTHING. Unlike GF, verzbicas will continue his success throughout his college career. and in both their respective hs and college careers, verzbicas will prove to everyone that he is the better runner. LV has already proven that he is the best hs runner ever.

So you got on here to complain about this thread and then proceed to rip on German. How are you being any different. Both great runners that should be celebrated, not ripped on. We have no idea what Lukas will do in college or if German will turn things around. Don't complain about someone ripping on your favorite runner and then rip on another.
What was his 3000m split (and 3200m for that matter)? Historically Pre usually has a watch at 3000m. This year, it was probably even more relevant to have one.
So does webbs 3:53 mile, rupps 5000 hs record or jim ryans big miles in pro races - the list goes on and on - leave you "flat" as well?...pretty much every hs record was set in senior competition...you're hard to please...wow...im sure u get all worked up if your hamburger isn't cooked to your exact specifications as well...hate for u to be my father...poor kid
Lukas is not American. He may be an citizen but still isn't American. So yesterday did Lukas sit outside in the heat for 6 hours before he ran? That’s what my kid did. Did he have to run against two girls because there wasn't anyone else there? He has the record, I know him and he seems to be a good kid. I really would like to see an real American born runner in a high school race, that's what will excite me. Nice run but somewhat tainted in my opinion.
