Does he live in Delaware? Just curious because some runners that can go to Tatnall or other private schools live out of state like in PA.
How does a kid run 4:23 in 8th grade and only 4:17 throughout four years of high school??!!
Maybe because he can get away with winning without trying hard? Can you blame him that much? Shamrocks.
Looks like he went to Duke. Improved a little at Duke, a bit under 4 in the 1500.
Maybe he just matured early. Or maybe he got hurt a lot later in his career and that held him back.
Either way, decent runner, but not a world beater as it turned out. He hardly is alone in that.
Well the frosh record is 4:09 and the guy never ran faster even though he went to Princeton.
Before I started coaching, we had an 8th grader run 4:40 on 10 weeks of 15-20 miles per week. no running outside of that, though he did play lower level soccer and basketball, so not inactive.
He finished out with a 4:31. Im pretty sure I could have gotten a little bit more out of him than our prior coach, but still he was a good coach for his time.
Also, this kid never did train for running outside of our 10 week season. Maintained soccer through senior year, and basketball through soph.
Well, the board just recently posted about an 8th grader that’s 15. So grade records count for nothing in my book. I went to HS with a kid who was 20. He dropped out shortly after. I guess he gave up. I would.
Who?
Well done Mr. Garrett! Tell your son great job!
He would have only run 4:30 without the shoes!!!

He was probably very talented and didn't run in the off-season during high school, or he got injured a ton.
Also, how do letsrun posters never check the dates for these things? People think this just happened. PSA - It was 10 years ago!
He was trained hard already at that point. He had a good career at Tatnall, but was already well on his way to reaching his potential at 13. I don't know what happened to Tatnall since he left but they have been a shadow of their former greatness since then on both the boys and girls sides.
I was better than the legendary Scott Fry as a freshman? Unfortunately I didn't get much better beyond that point.
He is now an assistant coach of his Alma Mater Tatnall and recently ran a 4:25 mile in the Coach’s invitational. He is still able to run with the top guys on the team.
So the team isn't any good either. Makes sense.
sounds like he should coach more and race less
Girls team made NXN though, and placed top 10 there.
Boys team won the NXR open race with only 1 senior
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
