Sure, stereotypes are often stereotypes for a reason, but there are personalities that span across every specialty.
Well, here's a stereotype for you: anaesthetists (sorry, anesthesiologists) are the MDs with the least prestige there is.
As one of my staff once told me, "Surgeons are the porn stars of the OR. Anesthesiologists are the fluffers." And, before you lash out and embarrass yourself any more, this guy WAS an anaesthesiologist.
If you have a genuine interest in the physiology of it, enjoy the procedures, and so on, this can be a great specialty. As for personality, anaesthesiologists are widely seen as being "quirky" (fits with the letsrun mold) and many extremely interesting people are in the field. As they say, some of my best friends are anaesthesiologists.
But you sound like a climbing little twerp, so I don't know that you'll be that happy with your "rank" (whatever that means - I'm amazed a med student would say something so infantile). Anaesthesiologists are technicians, plain and simple. If you can't accept this (and the fluffer thing), then it's going to be a long haul for you. Maybe money will make things better?
