As I said yesterday, the conditions here are ATROCIOUS for distance/mid distance: 90 degrees (and hotter on the track) and 20 mph wind gusts. You might as well hold an invitational mile in Death Valley. Today's distance results mean nothing. Mt. Sac 1500 at 7:30PM Friday evening will be better.

Can you give some examples of runners that have experienced this? I can only think of Ritz switching to Salazar, but that's not a HS to College transition.
Your point does make sense if the coach is truly awful/not a good fit, but I can't think of any other examples.
According to runworks calculator, 4:17.71 is about 4:05.9 at 60F, so times were about 12 seconds slower than typical effort but German still ran a bad race imo.
