Daesha Rogers is a youth national record holder and very experienced for her age. Unfortunately, she has been coached in the "Shock and Awe" style of Junior Olympic racing where each race begins with a knock-out attempt in the first lap. Every race from 800-3000 goes out in about 30 seconds. It's really tough to coach conventional pacing in these races. It takes a lot of nerve for a 5:00 1500 runner to give away a 10 second lead in the first 200m of a race and expect to find their way back into the race.
The kids eventually learn to even out the pace but the coaches don't ever seem to make an adjustment.
She still ran solid after that first lap. (67)
79,80,77 the last 3. Actually if you cut back at the right time, that first 30 seconds won't do a whole lot of damage.
I would still rather see a runner never lead until they are ready to finish but a 6th grader starting on a stagger is not going to tuck in and wait for a fast finish.

Can't agree with this.

WRONG. FAIL.
She ran the 1st 200 at a pace she could not sustain for 600 meters!!
This was how Jordan Hasay raced her first few years, until she learned a very hard lesson at the Stanford (HS division) Invite XC in 8th or 9th grade.

It's just stupid to race that way. You can't justify such a strategy
The girl's in 6th grade. Give her a break, for goodness sake!
Looks like she started out in the sprints
She has also run 2:15 this year already (I wonder if she went out in 28/62 for that)
I was sitting in the stands wondering if this girl was legit. the field didnt even attempt to go with her, even the jittery types. This tells me they knew she was not going to hold it. Talented for sure but her coach needs to teach her in addition to training her. Running 502 with those silly splits shows she is capable of more. The winner was a respectable 452 with a few racing together around 455-6. Had she raced smartly I easily could see her sprinting that last 100m to outkick that 2nd group
She just ran 2:11.36 and now leads the state!
Unless they are named Owen Skeete. He never learned and is still taking it out on people every time. He must have the same coach.
She's in sixth grade. She's allowed to have some goofy races for several more years. Go coach your own runners.
So what if she doesn't pace herself. It's great that she's ain't chicken s***. It will be a lot easier to teach her pacing down the road than it will be to to COMPETE.
She IS chicken shit. She thinks if she doesn't go out hard then she has no chance of winning. THAT IS PURE CHICKEN SHIT.
Yes, I know we're talking about a 6th grader lol
Bambino, don't be disrespectful, if you feel that way, fine. She is only 11 years old and I don't particularly appreciate you calling my granddaughter that type of name.
I doubt if anyone coached her to run that way. She probably just got caught up in the moment running against much older kids. A typical high school boys mile is still 61-70-72-67 = 4:30. You see it all the time, coach or no coach.
She runs the race not to see who is the fastest, but to see who has the most guts.
Female coach having affair with male runner. Should I report it?
Post about women banditing Brooklyn half marathon going viral on X
If Daniel's and Pfitz are outdated..then where do I look for modern training plans?
Colin Sahlman runs 1:45 and Nico Young runs 1:47 in the 800m tonight at the Desert Heat Classic
