He got married (arranged marriage in Rev. Moon's church) and was going to Chabot College and just training on his own for a year before transfering and racing collegiately. At least that's what the plan was.
I know he ran at the pausatf champ in x/c and ran fairly well, but behind Gotcher and the other standout stanford freshman. Trackhead, what college was he considering and why doesnt he jump on the Chabot college team for one season?
i heard he was considering UCLA. he is attending classes at chabot because he is doing missionary work for his church in the area and he doesnt want to waste any eligibility.

That's about what I heard -- and if I were a 9flat 2 miler in HS, I wouldn't waste a year at a JC (even though Chabot can claim Doug Padilla as a former athlete and member of the school 4xmile relay, which was briefly the fastest 4xmile relay run in the world that year).
He's done.
No brains.
That's why he's in a JC, and not a 4 year school.
The marriage part is true, but he's done--not a prayer for his running career as a collegian.
Too bad he's not still in HS, that way at the NCS meet, Ghebray could run circles around him some more.

wtf????
yeah right. he is an amazing talent and is nowhere near being done. and ghebray is great, but would not run circles around leal.

Tough as nails as a runner. Just a MTV watching want-a-be thug as a person. Real jerk!
Leal is one of the nicest guys I've met. True talnet, it was hot and he ran by himself to run 14:2mids going into his jr year on the track. He kicked the shit out of me that day.
Yeah, he would want NO part of Ghebray now or at any time in the future!

I have to second that. He is not the aforementioned "west bay thug". He doesn't even dress the part.
Would it be a waste to run one year and be the Calif. state champ at whatever distance he chooses, possible JC Natl/x/c champ? Still have three years at UCLA or whatever college he chooses. His studys would also be completed before his eligibility ends otherwise. Also why UCLA? much more of a 800/1500 emphasis and vs Cal.

I was actually wondering what happened to him myself, thanks for the info
he beat almost the whole farm team in the 5k race
I agree. Leal is one of the nicest guys ever. At no point in his high school career did he ever brag or put other runners down. He simply had two goals - to run his his best and to have fun while doing it. Leal was a great example of what hard work can do for a runner. He went from a 4:51 1600 runner in 8th grade to an 8:57 3200 runner as a senior (and that is after 2 XC state titles, 1 3200 CIF track title, a 14:27 5K as a sophomore, and a slurry of injuries). Leal has always persevered during all obstacles that he met. He is truly an excellent runner and a great person.
I know all the fecous is on Division 1, but if I were him I'd look at guys like Ryan Bak's college coach. He seems to develop runners -- not just race them.

Man, you obviously have no clue about Bay Area Geography. Where he lives in San Leandro, and his old High School, San Lorenzo, are in the EAST BAY.
Yea, I'm only from the castro valley, I have no perception ... I was refering to the dick who posted as west bay. I was mocking him, thanks for paying attention.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
