I know both aren't much to brag about, but I'm trying to decide which one I should go to.

CSUMB is much newer, and has less traditional academic programs. They try to be multidisciplinary and multicultural in most aspects of college life The campus is a mix of old army buildings inherited from former Fort Ord, and new modern buildings recently constructed. Most students I have talked to (I live nearby) seem happy with the attention they get from faculty. Monterey Bay is a nice place to live. Great running- hills, long trail along the beach, etc...
Bob Sevene used to be the cross country coach. He is still around, but I think there is someone new.
Humboldt is older, more traditional in its departmental structure. My impression is that the student body is more countercultural though of course expect a wide cross section. The Arcata area is beautiful, redwoods and ocean, but the weather is wet and cool. I don't know about the running scene. Avenue of the Giants is nearby. Arcata and Eureka seem like nice towns. Probably very conservative and anti-environmental outside of the college community.
"Probably very conservative" What! No, quite the opposite. It's a bunch of non-showering hippies who grow and smoke pot all day. Chicks don't shave, dudes don't work and neither is conservative. If your into hemp, no meat and what have you, Humboldt would be great.
Humboldt if you like to smoke pot.
CSUMB if you like living in an awesome part of CA.
Looks like the other posters stole my thunder, but just to reiderate, HSU has a very prevalent and open drug season.
And....Humboldt is the only non scholarship DII school to ever win a national title. They have plenty of running tradition and great places to train. I just don't think they are that good anymore.
I was looking at CSU MB athletics the other day. They have 2 guys listed on their cross country team (one is a grad student), they have no coaches listed, and they have no track team. So, assuming you are looking to run, your Spring would be free, from what I can tell.
