If you choose to run in shoes - which I think is a terrible idea - they are a very personal choice. Unless you know that this is exactly the model and size that he prefers, the chance of poor fit is high. I'd go with something else.
In general, I try not to buy gifts for friends in their area of expertise (e.g. a chess book for a chess playing friend), because the more they're serious about their particular interest, the more specific and detailed their criteria will be.

and a steak!
Best thing would be to get him a gift card for your local running store. He really needs to chose the shoes himself and make the choice after trying them on. Most good shoes retail at about $100, so that would be a good amount.
Heh, I think phallusies is onto something. He can buy himself shoes. You're his girlfriend. He's not dating you so that you can buy him shoes.
Make him a sandwich.

So you really don't ever wear shoes to run? Somehow I doubt this.
Personally, I'd prefer to receive a build-a-bear from my gf.
I would love a pair of running shoes. If it does not work out with the current bf. Let me know. Take Ruth's advice or find out what his favorite pair is and go buy it. He is a lucky guy.

Why would you doubt it?!
