The 3'33" in Berlin was after failing the WR in Zurich. Soon after the idea was to try again in Bruxelles. We were in Saint Moritz, and we had a full week of snow, so for Shaheen was possible jogging only. In Bruxelles the organiser planned to have 3 rabbits : the first was a Maroccan able running 8'13", that 3 days before the race had an injury. The second was Luis Miguel Martin, that 30' before the race honestly told me was not able to run fast as we needed (1800m at a pace of 5'15" for 2 km). So, the first rabbit (a Spanish named Perez), having the task to run till 1500m, went with a crazy pace (59" the first lap and 2'01" at 800) and stopped after 2 laps, so Shaheen remained alone, and only went to win in 8'02", very annoyed.
There were 5 days only between Bruxelles and Berlin, always without training for the snow in Saint Moritz.
In Berlin, he started in the last position, and only after 2 laps was able to find some speed, overtaking all the athletes apart Choge, but his shape was no more than 80% of 3 weeks before.
This can demonstrate there are a lot of variabilities in athletics, the most not depending on the athlete.
And this also for explaining why coaches working with top athletes have a different idea about human limits and personal possibilities : because they are the only one knowing what there is behind a performance.
