Have you already read the chapter on him in here?
Running with the Legends by Michael Sandrock, 1996
Chapter 17 Said Aouita (p. 445-466)
You can see a preview on Google Books:
i have heard and read that he didnt run for more than an hour, but he ran fast like all the time. many Moroccans were caught doping soon after him, i dont have any evidence of doping but if i had to bet id say EPO
I realize it's easy for the typical slack jaw letsrun poster to blame/credit Epo for the success of anyone who can run faster than 15:00 for 5k. In this instance I'll politely point out that Said's peak years of running were completed before Epo was comercially available. The correct term your looking for is: blood doping. Your welcome.
I want to give a technical contribution to better know Said Aouita.
It was in 1984, at the end of May (from Monday 28 to Thursday 31).
I was in the Italian National Center of Tirrenia, with a group of Decathlonists (at that time, I was the National Responsible for Multiple Events in Italy), and Aouita trained for one week in the Center (often he was in Tirrenia, because when he lived in Italy he was in Siena, under the management of Enrico Dionisi, and frequently moved to Tirrenia for having his training of quality).
Aouita had an incredible week of hard training, from Monday to Thursday, as follows :
Monday 28.05
3000m in 7'56" + 2000m in 5'08" + 1500m in 3'42" + 1000m in 2'19" (recovery 4' / 5')
Tuesday 29.05
3 times 1200m (rec. 6') running 150m fast (between 18"5 and 19") plus 50m "floating" (after 150m he stopped to push, but in any case the 50m were under 10"). The times of the full 1200m were 2'58" - 2'59" - 2'58"
Wednesday 30.05
4 km in 10'56" (8' recovery) + 2 sets of 10 x 100m under 12" (between 11"7 and 12"), recovery 1'30" among every test and 5' between the sets
Thursday 31.05
5 x 400m (recovery 2'30") in 50"8 - 50"3 - 48"8 - 49"7 - 50"2
Every day, he supported this training with 50' easy run.
On Friday he travelled by car from Tirrenia to Torino, where (on Sat 2 and Sun 3 of June) we had an international match between Italy, URSS, Poland and Hungary. Aouita was authorized to compete, as guest, out of competition.
He won both 800m (1'46"81) in the race 2, and 1500m (3'36"31), giving the impression of an athlete not in shape, and the Press (of course, not knowing anything about his last week) commented in negative way his performances.
Some day later (13th of June), Aouita, after a period of tapering, ran in Florence Meeting his first "real" competition of 5000m, only for controlling his endurance (his plan was to run 1500m in OG) : he won easy in 13'04"78, and, speaking with him, I suggested to run this event in Los Angeles, avoiding to meet Coe and Cram. Said followed the advise, and became Olympic Champion of 5000m, 3 years before becoming the first athlete under 13' in Rome.
The week of his training was very important for me, because, after looking his workouts, I discovered the effects of the so called "special block", that now is a normal part of my phylosophy, and that I use for all the distances (from 800m to Marathon).
Aouita had a very high pride. This was his main stimulus, and was one of the reasons of his successes. But it was also his limit : during OG of Seoul 1988, he tried to win 3 gold (800 - 1500 - 5000), so had to force his preparation of speed, and had an injury 10 days before the beginning of his competitions. This was the beginning of his end as number one in the World.
Wow. That's some serious quality. Did Aouita ever put in a endurance base building period or was it always 1500 training. It looks like he emulated Sebastian Coe's training methods.

Either Aouita overtrained his ass off, or he was on drugs, or both. Quality without recovery is insane for the PED-free.

Renato just came in here and owned the thread. Game. Set. Match.

John Walker was probably hoping that LA final would be a typical championship race with a modest early pace which would give him a good chance to hang on and use his good finish and excellent tactics acquired from so many years of racing (and winning) in those types of races. But the pace was fast (very fast for that era) and resulted in a 13:05.59 OR, leaving Walker out of contention and coming home in 8th.

Alberto Cova had a similar block of very high intensity with the fairly low density (long-ish recovery periods), the kind Moorcroft was often noted for using. Cova also used the sprint/float protocol on some of his reps. I recall him doing a set of six 600s in 1:27-1:29 and coming back the next day with 8-10 x 400 in 58 alternating fast and slow 100s.

Do you not realize that T&F involves massive use of PEDs at the elite level?
