Who were they? What was the reason for their demise? Obviously some regional and personal bias will exist here, but I'm curious if certain names will surface multiple times.

Most anyone who ran for Wetmore in HS.
This has been done a hundred times. Look it up.
Alex Bloom of Guilford HS , Guilford, CT. Set a couple of 2mile state open meet records in early 2000's in the 3200m in state of CT. I believe he attended D1 univ of Florida for short time but didn't hear of him again.
Many others too. But Looking back at the years So much happened in terms of improvements from many semi-good but not great HS athletes during NCAA and post collegiate time that you forget (nor do you care) who was really good in high school.

Ya seriously. He ran what, 8:46 as a JR? Injured for most of his senior year in track but still pulled off some impressive times, and didn't run a single race for UCLA. Falling out with the coach or something (but all I know are rumors).

Granville still ran 1:47 in college.

Nelson ran 13:44 as a college freshman. He transferred and I believe won a JUCO national cross championship.
Cal JCs did not compete in national juco championships - then - and I'm not sure if they do now. If I were to bet I would say not. But I believe Jeff ran on a natl. record setting DM relay anchoring (mile-not 1600) in 4:04 - I believe). injured 3 yrs in succession - ouch

Did Debbie Heald do anything beyond her famous race at age 16 (which is still the indoor high school record after 38 years)?

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
