Hall knows himself better than anybody. Maybe if he was coaching himself for Chicago he would of listened to his body and not a coach who over trained him. I remember a runner who won Boston 3 times in a row who was self coached. None other than Cosmas N'Deti, 1993,1994, 1995. Not too bad. Ryan will run better than ever in 2011. He is the type who will run better listening to his own body and being creative instead of listening to a coach who was running him into the ground.

My point is, if you're 5 feet tall and dream of dunking a basketball, great. Work your ass off and get as close as you can. But if it's really, really unlikely to happen, does that mean you and everyone who is your fan should obsess about how much you've failed? Dude, I am not going to say any more about this - do your own research. You will find that what I say is backed up in academia time and again. When it comes to historical truth of Jesus please don't ever give me one quote from the bible and expect me to accept it as truth. What a joke. Historians do you use the bible to distinguish truth from reality but they use it in an intelligent way. I was blown away by the structure of the writing, the first time I read the Old Testament which occurred far into adulthood.
I had been taught that Victor Hugo was most responsible for the modern structure of the narrative.
As I read the Gospels, I could not help thinking that the 100 greatest novelists of modern times would have had to have been transported back to the time of Christ in order for such a story to have been contrived. This was my first inkling of the veracity of the New Testament. I am still a work in progress which does not bother me because almost all Christian theologians still debate minute details of both the Old and New Testaments.
The concise description of the disciples' character traits rang so true. The letters of Paul to his flocks are full of human conflict and institutional politics. There is so much wisdom and folly.
You must remember that Jews and Muslims consider Christ a prophet or holy man which of course makes absolutely no sense since Christ often declared himself to be the Son of God. A mere prophet, a flesh and blood man who declared himself to be the Son of God would by definition be a nut case.
So, either he was what he described himself to be or other faiths are honoring a nut case as a great prophet.
It makes me very uncomfortable to engage in these types of discussions especially on a sporting message board but it has become so clear that so many young people have never looked into these matters for themselves, have never been taught about this history or philosophy in high school or college and worst of all, seem to have gotten their information from cable TV flame throwers, cheap soap salesmen like Bill Maher and John Stewart.
Funny is funny but snearing stand up comics shouldn't keep you from looking into these matters.
No one who wrote the Gospels ever met Jesus of Nazareth. The earliest, Mark, was written about 35 years after Jesus' death, while John was written another 30-35 years after that. They were written based on what the writers had been told about Jesus, and were written in Greek and not Aramaic, which would have been spoken by Jesus and his disciples. Go look up John 3:1-15 (I wrote about this on a different thread yesterday). Jesus tells Nicodemus that in order to enter the kingdom of God, he must be born "above", but Nicodemus is confused, because of a double meaning between "above" and "again" and tells Jesus that surely he can't re-enter his mother's womb, at which point Jesus makes clear what he's talking about. The reason we know this conversation never took place is because that double meaning between "above" and "again" exists in Greek and not Aramaic.
Additionally, the C.S. Lewis arguement that Jesus must have either been a liar, a lunatic or Lord and Savior based on his claims of divinity is an unconvincing one. It assumes that Jesus actually declared himself to be divine in real life, and it's only in John (the last and most recent of the Gospels) in which he does that. It's nowhere in the synoptic gospels. Given that John was written much later, it would seem that the idea of Jesus being God came later, at least a few generations after Jesus' death, as stories about him evolved and the early Christians adapted what they heard about him to what they wanted to believe and what was useful for their developing religion. So to answer C.S. Lewis (and you), we can't make an accurate assessment on Jesus the Man because it seems unlikely that he actually made any statement of divinity.

For the most part Frank Shorter did OK without a coach, why can't Hall do the same? Shorter had it dialed in after spending time with Jack B & the FLA group, why can't Hall come out of this even better?

It does hit 'em all, but calling out the self righteous atheism and not the religious preaching or any of the other criticism and/or commentary is a bit slanted, just sayin'. Not that we all don't help to derail the focus, but at least admit it's a group effort.

I do believe Hall can coach himself. There's something about his insecurity and checking the splits, the watch, the whole lack of personal trust that says to me he may actually be better off finding his own way without the direct guidance of someone else. One way or another, it seems like it couldn't get any worse.
Definitely needs to race more and at varied distances.
maybe the checking in on the splits and pace comes from the coaching he received....ever thought of that?

1) Agreed he seems to need to find his own way
2) Couldn't get any worse than the fastest native born American ever at Boston? 3rd and 4th place finishes at marathon majors? Could get a lot worse than that.

A guy that good who has spent that much time runnign at world class levels can certainly coach himself.

I'm not one to say his previous results aren't impressive; they're amazing. It's the trajectory that seems off and it can't be denied that the last couple years have seen a slide from what was a rising stength.
I really don't think it can get much worse, since we're talking about a guy who isn't a super-fast track guy but broke 60 at a young age for the 1/2. He's obviously built for distance, including XC, which I think would sharpen him up competitively and get him more familiar with mixing it up.
He got in the fight at London a couple years back and hung pretty tough, but something has to show him how to just let go and run as hard as he can and either succeed or crash and burn, not as a general practice or strategy, but something needs to take him into the danger zone.
Time to go train closer to sea level, get those batteries recharged, and shoot for a top-25 finish at World XC whenever it is held again.
the best part of world xc would be that he couldn't rely on splits and time trialing - he would have to get up there and race. Would teach him how to compete by position and not by time.

does anyone else think that the majority of Ryan hall's message was an attempt to be nice? I know the trolls here are ragging on religion and his ability to think for himself, but we are all working on the assumption that what he wrote is factual.
And I think what Hall wrote is genuine. I do think he spent a long time carefully considering what this move would mean for himself, his family, his coach and teammates. But as with public divorces, most likely he is covering several issues.
My translation and summary of Hall's anouncement:
"We are having coach/athlete problems, but I don't want to be Shalane Flanagan. So let me publicly say that its not TM, its me that wants the change. And a few months down the road I may take up a coach, but like a good breakup, I am going to leave a little time in between so it does not look like I am just looking at the greener side of the pasture. I have enough running experience to get by for one training cycle. Thank you to TM for bringing where I am today, but there are some changes I want to make that you will not allow me to do."
And I applaud him for writing politically correct, but it sounds like his reversion to using God as justification is more of a "i don't want to be mean, I am carefully considering this" as opposed to "i was struck by lightning and this is what it meant."
