Using god as a justification for his actions is weak. So you wanted a change and you got a change. What's that have to do with god? Divine right wasn't cool for the monarchies of the last 2000 years and it's not cool for you, either, Ryan.

I don't see him performing any better coaching himself. Especially since he said he will travel and run different places. Seems to me he doesn't care about his career getting better but wants to do what's convenient for his foundation. He will find a new coach or go back. I dont knoe many runners thay have had success without team support...

I am not sure his training needs to be any different but he needs to start racing differently. Instead of worrying about time and every split he needs to "listen to his body" and compete with others.

Naw, man, this is perfect. Who could possibly be a better coach than God? I suspect now that God is coaching Hall he will perform his best without fail. No more sub-par performances, pulling out of marathons, etc. And if that happens, I guess we can just say it's proof God isn't that great of a coach after all.

But if he does continue to have sub-par performances, it will only be because god is testing our faith and Hall will tweet about how it must be part of god's greater plan.

I'm as much of a Ryan Hall fan as anyone, but this just seems like the beginning of the end for him. Very few runners are able to coach themselves at the level needed to be elite. I believe Culpepper was self coached for a while and he obviously had quite a bit of success, but he also was the defiant type and admitted that he was essentially uncoachable (at least in his early career). I don't see that in Ryan Hall.

If I were to make a prediction, I'd guess that Ryan's performances continue to get worse, and that he'll eventually wise up and find a new coach. Let's just hope that it doesn't take long, because age-wise he's in his prime, and we all know that it doesn't last forever.

Culpepper ran his marathon pb in his debut. A self coached runner is similar to the guy that represents himself in the courtroom.

You know who also will suffer from this decision? His wife. She's finally started to make some progress in her racing after a couple of flat years. But I guess the husband always knows best.

I agree. I think this decision is focused solely on Ryan and what he wants. How is she going to benefit from self coaching?

Let's not forget that Frank Shorter, arguably the best US Distance runner EVER was self-coached. Also in an era where there wasn't a lot of information on running (compared to today.

Let Ryan Hall worry about Ryan Hall.

Although Shorter was self coached, he trained with a cadre of talented smart runners and they constantly talked about training. It was a very synergistic environment. They all improved together. I think Hall is making a mistake. He needs either a coach or an enclave or both. I agree with the earlier comment that he may have lost focus and might be more concerned about his Foundation than with his athletic development
