Curious as to some of the schools that have the best 800m programs or what coaches have success in specializing with 800m runners.

I heard that Vin Lanana guy was pretty good
University of Albany is up and coming.
Is JJ Clark still at Tennessee?
Of course, the best is Gags
Johnny Gray's UCLA Bruins. Only been coaching one year, got a 1:45, 1:47, 1:49 returning.
university of virginia. they won penn relays 4x8 with everyone returning this year...and they have robby andrews
Vigilante at UVA, hands down.
Thanks Johnny Gray for having no shame and plugging yourself on Letsrun. Once a self promoter, always a self promoter. When will it be about the kids on the team, and not about Johnny? Just sayin!
Several Big Ten schools have done very well. Michigan used to have it here but I am not sure about the new coach. Penn State had a fabulous trio this year, although a couple came in as stars. Wisconsin has had good success with 'normal' guys (the guy who made NCAAs this year was a walk-on), and they have gotten number of the milers down below. They had three at 1:47 this year, I think.
Look at schools that have won some 4 x 800s, like Virginia and Columbia. To an extent you have to distinguish between schools that have put their money in that area and those that have been successful with the guys that they get. However, top guys seem to gravitate to these programs.
I'd say Penn State, UVA, Columbia and Oregon
Best thing to do is look at Penn relays and Drake relays results. Last year had Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State (won both relays at Drake), Stanford, and Notre Dame.

I’m a former teammate of Johnny and he is not a self promoter, and if he is, so what. He has an Olympic medal and you don’t; you must be jealous of him. He stayed on the elite level for 20 years; what have you done?

This is part of it, but I think you want to go deeper than this.
What you want is the contribution of the school. Taking a 1:46.0 guy and transforming him into a 1:45.90 guy is not as big a contribution as taking a 1:50.0 guy and getting him to 1:48.00 (it is harder to make improvements the closer you are to the limits, so 0.1 improvement at 1:46 is better than at 1:50).
Also, some schools are good at working with stars but not others, while the converse may be true for other places. For a high school runner I think it is important to look at what the school has done for runners of his ilk, not what the fastest times from the school are.
Somebody's a little touchy... I'm not Johnny but I am an alumni who follows the program and is excited about where its going.
Penn State has a great program.
Wake Forest with John Millar as the new head coach should do well. He was great at Notre Dame for years.
On the women's side, Lou Duesing has done a great job at Cornell--RoJo's Cornell men have put together some good 4x800s, as well.
look out for St. Mary's College in CA, word is they got a star new mid d coach
That's pretty funny, they have maybe 2 legitimate runners on that team. The rest are 17+ 5kers. And their number one is a 10k runner
