Thank god I have enough talent to run sub 20 off of one 3 mile run a week.
Thank god I have enough talent to run sub 20 off of one 3 mile run a week.
Male 50, ran 19:5x and 19:3x about 6 months ago (at 49) on about 65-70 km a week and no real speed work.
The 19:3x was a bit of an anomaly as I hadn't got back into regular training after a 25k race a couple of weeks earlier and didn't even feel it was that fast - short course/timing error maybe. Currently injured - injuries being the main reason I was only doing 65km. Probably going to have to start doing weights, cross training and all those other things most runners don't like doing and don't have time for.
Main aim at the moment is to run injury free and build mileage back up. Maybe aim for sub 1:30 half marathon later.
Seems like everyone on this thread is either female or an old male. Which makes sense.

I just ran 19:05 last weekend. I have run 56 miles in the last 9 weeks so I am avg 6 miles a week. I don't really qualify for this thread though as I ran 18:28 and 18:42 the last two races.
It is great just showing up for a race every weekend but never running during the week.

okay, i'll break the mold: i'm both female AND old: 50, with a PR of 19:30 at 48 and ran 19:45 at 50 this summer. i have a couple of low-key 5Ks scheduled for the fall, along with xc (a first for me).
mostly, i'm an ultra trailrunner, but test myself with more objective measures now and then just to keep honest. having now completed my last ultra of the year, i'll focus in on workouts targeted to these shorter distances.
typical mileage: 60-70 mpw (i get injured if i go above 70).
recent 800s workout: 8x 1/2 mile (dirt track) in 3:09-3:05 with 2 min rest.
training paces are rather irrelevant, since i do the vast majority of my training and racing on technical trails.
PRs (age):
50 mile trail 7:55 (48)
marathon 3:17 (45)
half 1:32 (47)
10K 41:24 (48)
5K 19:30 (48)
road mile 5:47 (50 - only time i've raced a mile)

At the NYRR 4 mile races in Central Park 6:20 pace gets you well within top 10% overall, but also top 15% in the M25-29 age range.
That means 85% of Male 25-29 are either transvestites or Benjamin Buttons?
I live near Central Park [downtown NYC] and will be running at VCP for a 5k
I recently set my 5K PR of 19:22 (having run 20:00 in 2006 as a 15 year old).
Are there lots of races there? I have been at about 25 mpw.
The NY Road Runners put on a lot of great races, but sadly only a couple road 5Ks, both of which are on hilly courses. The VCP 5Ks are even hillier, and a minute slower than the road for folks in the 19-20 5K range.
I'm 46, and despite years of 35-45 miles per week, I slow too much at increased distance. 30 seconds for 200m without much specific focus, and 5:15 for the mile, but I have yet to run a Central Park 4-miler (and this is the most frequently run distance for NYRR races) any faster than 6:39 pace!
44 yr old male here. 5K PR is 16:17 from 96. Most recent 5K was a 19:59 back in Jan. Just coming off knee surgery and am doing about 15 mpw now. Training for some 5k and 10k's next spring. Would love to get back under 18 min again at the very least. Anyone here live near Boulder? Maybe we can do some runs together.
Male, 39. Returning from IT band injury with twice daily 3 mile jogs (to and from work). PR is 18:40, but not in that shape. Looking to run 19:XX in a Turkey Trot (7 weeks). Will probably focus on increasing intensity rather than mileage between now and then. Good luck everyone.
so, you do realize that this thread was likely set up to mock you (OP = lol...) and you are falling right into it....
Male, 41, 177.
History - Age, Avg Mileage, PR regression
19, 60 mpw, 15:45
25, 50 mpw, 16:11
32, 45 mpw, 17:57
35, 40 mpw, 18:42
40, 40 mpw, 19:23
Gettin old sucks! My best PR should have happened when I was 21, but I had two surgeries for spontaneous pneumothorax on both lungs. Dr. said scar tissue could reduce capacity up to 25%. Another factor, I went from 140-150 lbs to 185 when I was 30. At 6'1", I wasn't horribly heavy, but the body change is significant for running. I'm at 177, shooting for at least 175, lightest I've been in 10 years. I broke my ankle over 2 years ago, but been training solid for over 20 months, and am due for a pr.
Ran an 8k on Sunday. Went out in 6:17, a bit fast but I like to get used to it and work on improving the middle of my race. Wind picked up hard at 20mph on 4th mile, averaged 6:49 pace, goal was 6:40. I outkicked the guy in my AG so I thought I won, but due to chip timing, he started further back in the pack and was still 2 seconds faster, dagnabbit.
Ran track workout today with friend from work who's running the Chicago marathon. His last fast workout, so we did 2 mile, 800 and 400. I did 12:43, 3:05, 85. He's faster. Past workouts were 9x400 (60 sec rest) 80-84, and 5x800 (2:00 rest), 3:01-3:07. Mileage is between 39 and 45 miles, longish run is 11.
Have a 5k on Sunday, hope to run under 6:30 pace. Another 5K on Oct 16, and will shoot for sub-6:15 pace hopefully on Oct 31.

Here's a young male...
Currently 24. Former high school XC runner who can only run 3 times a week because of biomechanical issues. Best 5K since my injuries caught up with me after high school is a 19:18. I ran 17:45ish a few times in high school.
I still enjoy running a lot, but I don't think I'll ever get back to being able to run every day, which is what it would take for me to get back down closer to my former times.
So, I enjoy being one of the turtles here on letsrun.
Age 47, male
19:37 5k on 40 mpw (slowdown = 2:00 in 30 years)
1:32 HM
5:46 mile (track, solo time trial)
It's hard for me to run under 20 minutes without 30 mpw.
It'll be hard to stay under 20 minutes past age 50.
I have so much respect for the people in that sub 20 range. You're obviously not a gifted runner, but yet, you're still out there, working hard, and most likely because you just love to run. I barely managed to eek out a sub-20 and had to fly to a downhill course to pull that off!

Sure, but everyone ignored that; thus the troll was an epic fail.
Glad to see other not-so-speedy runners out there who enjoy following the speedsters.
38 y.o. male triathlete from Stevens Point, WI (home of Chris Solinsky and Suzie Favor Hamilton). 20:29 PR that I'm hoping to push under 20 this fall on just 15-20 mpw. I have a couple of problems holding me back:
1. I mostly run for relaxation (and exercise for the dogs).
2. I don't have access to a good track. I stick mostly to the trails, and it's hard to measure your times when conditions are changing and distances are only estimates.
3. I keep changing my focus (half marathon, half ironman, swimming a fast 200IM, etc.)
Long ago, I had four goals: sub-60 400, sub-5 mile, sub-20 5k, and qualifying for Boston. I'm not sure if I'll get any of them, but the 5k is closest - although I'm not going to resort to finding a downhill course!
Sub20, I can get you under 20 easy!! Post your e-mail and we can talk about it.
ran 19:41 & 19:49 dec,2012, age 56. zero speedwork. 4-8mpd,2 runs, except one 8miler weekly. avg 8:19/mile. 5k pr 15:15 in 1983. missed running from 91-08 ,heel injury. It is a major Blast to be back, even at this putzy pace! Just enjoy life.
