I mentioned this in another thread, but thought it might warrant a thread of its own.
According to multiple sites (including this one: http://www.when-is.com/ramadan-2012.asp ), Ramadan in 2012 will be roughly from 20 July to 18 August. (Those who observe will actually begin at sunset on 19 July in some areas.)
Meanwhile, the Olympic dates are 27 July-12 Aug 2012: http://www.london2012.com/
More info about the conflicting dates here: http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/2012_Olympics_clash_with_Ramadan
Be it noted: "The International Olympics Committee has specified that the games must take place between July 15 to August 31." Hence there would be at least a partial conflict with Ramadan, no matter what part of that time window the London organizers chose.
I'm REALLY looking forward to all the tearjerking human-interest stories about athletes confronting the conflict between their religion and their competition--not. Looks like I won't be watching this Olympics, either...
And I have a question: What will all the East African runners who've, um, "emigrated" to Arabic countries do? Will they be pressured to fast (given the publicity and all), even if they're not adherents of the religion?
Boy, Hitchens was right: religion really does poison everything.
The 2012 Olympics are SMACK IN THE MIDDLE OF RAMADAN.

PS--I realize that others spotted this conflict quite a while back. Sorry if I've duplicated a previous thread on the subject...

Some Muslim athlete will sue in as a violation of human rights.

They're not going to make non-Muslims fast. Especially non-Muslims that they're paying to do well in the Olympics. Idiot. -
Some athletes will have to make some tough decisions, and the media will make a big deal out of it. Then they will pick out a few athletes and make a movie about their turmoil. Perhaps they could call the movie 'Chariots of Fire'. Then they can put some really bad, boring music to the slow motion running scenes, and then win all sorts of Academy Awards.

Learn something please.

Who cares? If this causes a problem for them, they're too stupid to realize that the invisible man in the sky is imaginary.

In western states we have track meets on Sundays so no bigee.

Well, since it starts Aug 11 this year I figure it would affect races this year.
If you have a 5 pm race and haven't eaten since before dawn it would be tough. -
Feel sorry for those Kenyan imports to Middle eastern countries. They are converted muslims now, right? Too bad for Said Shaheen.
Also sucks for North African distance countries (Morocco, Algeria). -
I had not idea that Ramadan varied as much as it does.
I did not know that the Islamic calendar is a lunar one. Interesting. -

Story about NFL player dealing with Ramadan. -
muhhammad ali and mike tyson and kareem abdul jabbar all had this problem of not being able to eat or drink even a sip of water from dusk to dawn and when reporters asked them about this all said that their religion is more important than any fight, game etc.

I assume that this is not the first Olympics that coincides with Ramadan. If not the Olympics, then probably the T&F world Championships. I mean, you would think that they would coincide fairly often, given that they both take place in late summer/early fall.

Shaheen is not a Muslim. He doesn't even live in Qatar, IIRC. He lives and train in Kenya. -
I reiterate, f***ing learn something. Estimated dates of Ramadan:

Maybe you see a pattern. Yes, it will be in December at some point. And some people wonder why most of the world hates Americans. -
And you are quite an arrogant jerk. If you are an American, you've given a reason to hate them.

The 2026 Winter Olympics will be smack in the middle of Ramadan! Boycott!
