Have I missed something, or is this a huge, huge personal best for Molly Huddle? Who is she training with? Who is her coach right now? My searches for her have turned up a previous 5k best of 15:17, which means she just dropped TWENTY SIX SECONDS off her PR. Almost unheard of at that level. I know Wheating ran 1:33 and placed in the top fifty and all in the 8, but this has got to be the performance of the day.
Agreed, HUGE race for her. She has consistently been getting better and better, and ran a solid race at Stanford in the 10k (even with some stomach cramps that caused her to slow down a lot with 3 laps to go). This is the performance of the day for sure, she's having a breakthrough now... future of USA running, that American record is within reach.
She ran 15;05 early on this 2010 season; as a Freshman at ND she ran 15;36, still the AJrR. At 10km in early 2008 she nailed a 31;27 for ten km. Very plainly she is one of the best in the USA since 2002 when she ran 10;01 for 2 miles as a HS senior.
She's been having a breakout 2010. She has lowered her PR a LOT this past year. She ran 15:05 at Mt. Sac a few months ago, so a bit over 15 seconds PR today. She was also 2nd at USA XC champs and did well at Worlds...

Because she wasn't a contender for the 2004 Olympic team.
Huddle previous was 15:05. That is a 14 second pr!!!
Begley has a 14:56. Flannigan the record at 14:44
Koll ran 14:55 and her pr was 15:17 so she ran a 22 second pr.

if Wheating had run 1:33 in the 8, believe me, he would have had the performance of the century.
Huddle ran 4:09 - 1500 a couple of days ago. Ran great at World xc this year, and has been pr'ing all season.
USA is definitely on the rise in distance racing, just look at what this year's collegiate runners have already done in the post season.. wheating, koll..
Add Hasay in a few years and there are more on the way.
Upper 30+ y.o. Jen Rhines runs 14:5X, after a career spanning 20+ years, and everyone pats her on the bat and doesn't blink an eye.
26 year old Molly Huddle runs 14:5X, after steadily improving her whole career and this whole season, and BELLS GO OFF... "where the hell did that come from".... insinuations that XXXX.
Sorry, but this is no surprise. Good for her. Healthy and consistently improving. There's a few more Americans females who have potential besides Deena/Shalane/Kara, and they're getting opportunities to run fast times.

the performance of the race probably should go to Jessica Augusto of Portugal, who ran 14:37 and was clearly elated about it. Turns out that her pr was something like 14:56 from 2007. That is a 19 second drop into elite territory.

Ray Treacy is easily one of the best Womens coaches in the USA if not THE best. Kim Smith and Molly Huddle 14:39 and 14:51 respectively. And a bunch of other girls running really fast. Not bad for a guy who gets little or no recognition.
She lives a less sinful life than most of us - that probably translates into good running.
The "performance of the race" is not a 14:37 in a race in which someone ran 14:27. Let's be clear.
