I know quite a few people who'd disagree with you.

Well, name them! Coe was a consummate kicker with devastating speed. He could close like nobody else. Who other than Coe could run the last 100m of a 1500 or an 800 in under 12 seconds?

maybe if he had that much left he should have gone earlier...you don't break records by waiting until the last 100
I agree. He looked like he had a LOT left flying through the line like that. He easily could have run over a second faster. 3:35? I don't know, but def could have dipped into 3:36s.
Went back to the video and did 100m splits too:
14.09
14.41
14.77
15.15 (58.42)
15.26
15.14
14.68
14.50 (59.58)
14.53
15.09
14.56
14.51 (58.69)
14.24
14.03
12.67 (40.94)
Now these are not the official splits, these are from my watch while watching the video online but I did take splits from the same spot each time so the rate of change in his race will be the same. You could do the same and your splits will be different but the main idea will be there.I just love me some numbers! If you add them up it should be 3:37.83, which is exactly what Andrew ran. I did the same thing on my watch when watching the PRE Classic when Steve Magness ran 4:01.02. What a day.
Do you guys really sit at your computer with a stopwatch, replaying segments of the video over and over to get the correct split? I thought I was a major track nerd just because I watch replays of races and spend way to much time on this site, but I guess I have nothing on you guys.
No Potato, first time. Don't hate.
um no

I guess it depends on the pace and the previous 300m, but you're right in that Coe did finish in under 12.0
European Cup semi final 1981: - 11.3 last 100m in a 1:47.57. He was level with Kirov entering the straight, then put 12m between them. Kirov (Olympic bronze) finished in 1:49.11 (about 12.7 for last 100)
Moscow 80: - 12.1 last 100m, but off a 52.2 last lap. That's the fastest ever last 100 in a 1500 Championship race.
Probably Ovett, Morceli and Aouita had the turn of speed to run 12.0 or under also, though not sure if there is a record of them doing so.
Ovett did run the penultimate last 100m in 11.9 -12.0 at the 77 World Cup. It was hand timed, but looking at the video it seems that he did run this sort of time.
I've looked at the race 2 times now, and each time I get 26.6 for last 200m and 12.9 for last 100m.
55.1 (14,6)
40.6 (14.0)
26.6 (13.7)
12.9

Ovett's 77 World Cup is still the greatest kick I've ever seen. The way he crushed John Walker is unimaginable.
Colin Sahlman runs 1:45 and Nico Young runs 1:47 in the 800m tonight at the Desert Heat Classic
