ALOHA:
I will give you a formula for running well:
Running successfully requires 50% base training (lots of miles of running), 35% Karma, 10% inspiration from coaching, etc., and 5% luck.
Start with the 50%. I hope you love to run because all those miles and miles of base training make your leg super-legs. You can do what other runners can't do because your legs are stronger.
Karma is the most OVERLOOKED part of running, but it accounts for 35% of your ability to run well. No matter how hard you train success will be limited if you are running for your own benefit. You develop GOOD karma as you do things that benefit other people and your karma will defeat you if you work towards selfish ends. I used to mow the lawns of elderly people in my neighborhood. If I could cut their entire lawn and leave before they discovered me my karma grew faster than if I was caught and praised or gifted for my service. I picked up trash on the way to school; again trying to do good without being praised. Even in running I tried to focus not on self or goals for me but on what I could do as a runner. I worked out hard knowing that anyone who saw me would see courage and determination. I was demonstrating those qualities as a runner, not for me but for others. All those miles I ran (23-35 per day average) were because I believed that if I put in enough work something good would come of it all. I could make the world a better place by my running.
Inspiration and luck, the last 15% are beyond your control. Don't even worry about them. Just take care of those two factors you can control and you will run fine.
