I think a large part of it has to deal with how long they have been there.
Coach Willy Wood at Columbia has been there since 1994, but also private schools have more money available for salaries and he's living in a high-cost of living area. I think it is common for Ivy League coaches to be in the 6 figures if they have been there a while. I heard that the head coach at Harvard was over 6 figures before he retired in 2006 (he had been coaching there for 24 years).
Michigan 2009 data:
Henry - $116,000
McGuire - $97,850
Warhurst - $92,700
I'm not sure if it was for basketball only because it was in the special ncaa basketball section, but USA today last week reported on a company that was created to track every college coaches' salary. The company gathers all the information then sells it to the different D1 athletic programs so those programs can get a feel for how much the other colleges are paying their coaches. I doubt they would have track salaries. also, many coach that works at a public school has to have his/her salary posted because they are a state employee.
$91 000 Gary (Mens XC & TF)
$91 400 Dennis (Womens XC & TF)
Check the number of NCAA titles each coach has won. That is the discrepancy at Texas.

Breaking Into the Biz wrote:So if you look up some coaches and see the state pays them $30,000, but the total compensation is $100,000, you know they have a successful side business.
I find this hard to believe. I think you read it wrong. Example?
Nope. If you go to the link for California state employees and click on details for any given coach you will see a regular pay category and a other pay category. In some states, it is law that all income earned be reported to your employer if your employer happens to be a state agency. So like I said, they(state of CA in this instance) don't really care if you make a million dollars via another source, just as long as you report it to them. They will in turn, put it out there for all to see. And yes, I have looked at many coaches salaries and you can see what they are paid from the state vs. what they take in in additional income from things like camps, clinics, or even side ventures like real estate. Anyway, now you know, check it out for yourself.

How much does Gina Procaccio make?

Pretty good list, but I am curious about the rest of the Big 12 as well as the SEC. What are the salaries of Redwine, Pepin, Kittley, Rovelto and their assistants? Same for SEC...Holloway, Clark, Bucknam, etc...How much time did it take you to make your current list? Just curious because I am sure it took sometime.

Big 12 Salaries are crazy....

Feedback that could change paychecks in the future.
Folks at the athletic department and the university say that to the naked eye these salaries might seem inflated but they are all based on market value, if you want the best, you have to pay for it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following figures are based on salary alone and do not include bonuses, booster donations, or endorsements.
Football coaching staff salaries:
Vic Viloria - Two year contract. Base salary $160,000
James Coley - Three year contact. Base salary $205,000 + $100,000 for speaking engagements/public relations
Demeyune Craig - Two year contract. Base salary $175,000
Lawrence Dawsey - Two year contract. Base salary $205,000 + $15,000 for speaking engagements/public relations
Eddie Gran - Three year contract. Base salary $205,000 + $100,000 for speaking engagements/public relations
Odell Haggins - Two year contract. Base salary $205,000 + $45,00 for speaking engagements/public relations
Greg Hudson - Two year contract. Base salary $205,000 + $100,000 for speaking engagements/public relations
Mark Stoops - Three year contract. Base salary $205,000 + $195,000 for speaking engagements/public relations
Darin "D.J." Eliot’s - Two year contract. Base salary $175,000
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other top paid Athletic positions:
Athletic Director
Randy Spetman - $ 205,000
Men's Basketball coach Leonard Hamilton - $205,000
Women's Basketball Coach Sue Semrau - $ 199,875
Men's Track and Field Coach Bob Braman - $160,000
Baseball Head Coach Mike Martin - $149,478
Women's Soccer Head Coach - $ 128,109
all North Carolina state employees can be found here
Don't forget the others at Texas Tech:
Rock Light $82,500
Jon Murray $85,000
Nebraska Huskers(2010 Big 12 Outdoor T&F Champs)
Gary Peppin $160,000.00
Billy E. Maxwell $105,000.00
Chrissey Grimes $85,000.00
Plus multiple bonuses for all six sports for men and women.
This is interesting because Robert Johnson at Oregon, has basically the same duties that Rock Light had before he left Oregon. Now Johnson is making $87,500, only 5K more than Light, but look at the results...no comparison. If Light is worth $82,500, then Robert Johnson is probably worth well over $100K.
On the flip, Vin Lananna reportedly makes around $400K with incentives. But, he has not only both the men's and women's track teams, but also Olympic Trials and continuous NCAA and USATF championships to deal with. A guy like Lananna is probably also worth his salary because he brings in about 4,000 season ticket holding fannies into the stands, and keeps the Eugene track nuts happy (and the Nike guys in Portland).
