Is this John Carroll? Forgive me but I've never heard of this guy. He just got dissed bigtime by the director of USATF-NE though.

No, the op is coach at Falmouth,MA.
Steve brings up a good point when he writes:"- Franklin Park is a city park, not Franklin State Park."
MA has lots of state parks. GBTC and many other teams put on xc races at Bradly Palmer State Park in Topsfield.
I hope there are other parks with a combination of fields, paths, hills that would be good for xc that we don't know about yet?
Tom
Here is a link to the list of MA state parks.

Maybe lots of runners can fan out and investigate all these parks to see if there is an overlooked cross-country course in them. If so organize your club to put on a race on it as a test.
It would be a delight to find a new course.
Tom
Steve:That was actually thought about and explored as a possible option (one of the Mashpee golf courses)for the New England Meet, back when the Parks Department would not allow us on the golf course anymore.
And, John, in the meantime, maybe you can put in a reservation to have your golf course in Falmouth host the state meets.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I have a historical question that maybe some of the Mass XC crowd can answer.
I've poked around on the web and haven't found anything that helps.
In a piece of fiction I'm working on, I need to have a Cambridge grad student who was a decent XC collegiate runner (nothing special, just OK at the college level and loves to run) running in some XC events.
This would be in the late sixties/early seventies -- say, 67 earliest, 71 latest
So -- were there club or all-comers XC events, then, where a guy could show up and run? Would he have to belong to a club, in those AAU days? If there were any races, would there have been just one or two a year, or would they have been more frequent?
Thanks for any help.
I remember as a kid in the mid 70's, my dad used to run AAU races in Lynn Woods, Lynn, MA. Not a bad distance to go from Cambridge if your character has a car. Don't forget to use the Fresh Pond 2.5 milers in your piece.
i look forward to FraNKLIN park,
