It seems that cross country may be a thing of the past over the historic Franklin Park course in Boston. The group that manages the park wants to impose a fee per runner on all meets that use the park. Not only do they want to have a fee for using the park, but a fee for every runner in the races on that day.
This would be expensive for the H.S. meets at the park. If the State Class Meets have, let's say, 3,000 run in the Class Meets, the park group wants between $1 and $2 per runner on that day. This not only will be for H.S. meets, but college and open meets using the park. The State H.S. Assn. (MIAA) will most likely agree to pay that fee. The H.S. group (MSTCA) does not want to pay it. Nothing is know about the colleges (Heps, ACC, ECAC, IC4A, America East, NCAA Qualifying) and open (Mayors Cup-BAA).
This does not just go back to last years "mud races" for the H.S. meets and the NCAA qualifying in November. The park group has been hinting, for years, they would like to have the park for themselves. People coming in disturb their neighborhood.
Various groups, such as the Mass. State Track Coaches Assn., have volunteered to help in the upkeep of the park after X-C seasons, but that has not been accepted. I am not sure if if a "we'll take your money donation, but not your volunteers."
