Congrats to Sam Bair and Andrew Jesien! I'm truly happy for both individuals accomplishing such a great feat. No matter what the haters say you guys did it! Great Job and keep up the good work!
troothspeaker- not sure you get it. This 4:00 barrier was this young man's Everest. He's been under a lot of pressure about it and to come so close, so many times, only made it tougher. Do you thiink in 20 years when someone finds out he was a sub 4:00 miler that their response is going to be, "yeah, but what place did you get?"
Congrats Sam. Smell the roses...
Congrats Slam Bonez. MD4LYFE.
Since that time he fell down those icy stairs on the way to study tables and when Ernie, I think that's who it was, the dude at Rosie's that night that asked us what two good looking guys are doing there on a Saturday night I figured he'd break 4 someday. Just look out for them piecosts and you'll be ok.
Ran his first 4:00.xx in 2006, and ran that five more times. I'm glad he didn't give up.
I've ran with sammy once or twice. He is a great guy and a hard worker.
This is great for him. Big congratulations.

I don't know Sam Bair but I do know an achievement when I hear of it! And when someone has persisted and finally reached a goal, that's worth applause... and when that goal is a sub-4 min. mile, that's huge to reach it!
There will always be the naysayers and people who want to focus on negatives, but I wonder if a lot of that isn't just envy that another person has received some well-deserved accolades.
Only approixmately 340 men in US history have broken 4:00 for a mile. Only 3 father-son combos have done so in the history of the US, and only 4 in the history of the world.
I'd say that Sam joining the ranks of sub-4:00 milers is an amazing accomplishment. Anyone who thinks otherwise probably hasn't broken 4:00 for 800m.
His father used to race in a shirt with a picture of a Bayer Aspirin on it.

Sam Bair is the man he finally did it. The kid has a lot of talent. If it were not for his injuries he would of done it a long time ago. You wimps that bash runners on the board should have some respect since most can"t run under the top womens times. Can most run under 15:00 for 5,000...under 30:30 for 10,000,how about can most run under 2:18 in the marathon? If the answer is I can"t run faster than the top women you need to get off this site and go train. I don"t think any woman has broken 4:00 for the mile and as for me I don"t think any women has run 2:11:08 in the marathon when that happens I'll shut up.
Sub-4 is a great achievement! Good job Sam!
I don't know Sam Bair, but to come that close so many times and to finally break the barrier must be immensely satisfying. Good for him!!
Actually, Bair is the 342nd US runner to break 4:00 for a full mile.
Women's world record in the marathon is 2:15:25
so yes you're safe

doesn't really count though cause of the oversized 307m track, you convert that to a real banked 200m track and its just like the million other 4 flats he's run
You're an idiot.
Where is Sam living now. Who is coaching him?
Bair said in a flotrack interview that he is living/training at altitude in Boulder, CO...From the sounds of it, he is coaching himself.
It would be great if some sponsor would take a look at him and give him a shot. I think if he's been training entirely on his own and can run 3:59.xx, then he's worth a chance.
