Who did he get from 5 min to 4 min, and in what amount of time? Not that I don't believe you, but that's a HUGE jump

Bob Sevene is a nutjob. I would avoid him at all costs.
Who is Charles Torpey and where does he coach?
trackhead,
in shifting from one style of training to another, a year of being tired is NOT NORMAL.
intelligent, higher level of training = improvement
shitty coaching = anti-improvement.
not very complicated.

You forgot:
Impatient + bad mentality = anti-improvement
Before you rip on Warhurst look at Sullivan, McMullen, etc. The world's best coach can't do crap when the athlete doesn't do their part or doesn't mesh with the program.
No votes for Gags?
My vote is Gags, what he did at Georgetown back in the day, that was off the meat rack.
Tim
It is normal.
Anytime you transition from a lower mileage program to a higher mileage program, you are going to be really tired for a good period of time.
It's not in the first year that the results become evident -- but in the second, third and beyond. It takes about a year to establish the new background that is associated with a higher mileage program, and it's perfectly normal to be very tired while the organism adjusts to its new demands.
Patience, patience, patience...
You are right Timo and don't forget that 3:31 guy he promised us this last year down on the farm. I always appreciate a coach that can back up his mouth. Who was that guy he was going to get to 3:31 again?
"By the way- don't forget to add other greats to the list- like JB Hagland, 4 time All American, 2001 XC National Champ"
Well, if you want to get into all that, JB also anchored the 2002 national champion indoor DMR team and then outdoors won two national championships in the 5k and 10k.
Of course, nobody has yet mentioned Seamus McElligott, Haverford '91:
(these are all outdoors)
1989 5000m All-American
1990 5000m National Champion
1990 10,000m National Champion
1991 10,000m Div.I All-American
1991 10,000m National Champion
1991 5000m National Champion
Haverford's mid & long distnace outdoor record board:
800m Karl Paranya '97 1:48.26 5/23/97
1500m Karl Paranya '97 3:39.84 7/13/97
Mile Karl Paranya '97 3:57.6 5/14/97
Steeple J.B. Haglund '02 8:56.90 5/4/02
5000m Seamus McElligott '91 14:04.90 5/11/91
10000m Seamus McElligott '91 29:14.34 4/25/91
Of course, we were talking milers so one might more appropritely mention these other great milers who ran under Tom:
Kevin Foley, three time 1500m national champion & one time all-american, still holds the division three championship record
Matt Leighninger, three time 1500m all-american and 1991 steeple national champion
Aaron Curry, two time 1500m all-american and indoor 1500m national champion
Others who got at least one 1500m all-american certificate: Aryn Davis '97, Ntobeko Ntusi '98, and Liam O'Neill '86?.

I think any serious middle-distance student-athlete would be advised to check Haverford out. There is a great interview with Tom directly at the same site as the marcus interview mentioned above:

. It's a solid read.
I agree... Charles Torpey of La Salle University in Philly
Dirk it was u cause your so darn fast. 3:31, right. He didnt promise it, he said it was the goal, and the only goal.
Tim
it stands beyond reason that the best coach for you would be found when you discover the animal that can cover the greatest distance in a 3:00 - 5:00 span. then all you have to do is get to know it.
GODDAMN!!!
Dya think he can turn this 5 minute guy into a 4 minute guy????
Joe,
Do you mean observing that animal, like Percy Cerutty did horses?
What did Torpey do at Maryland. I don't recall any great milers. I'm not saying there wasn't, but can you give some examples. Who has he developed at LaSalle?
3:53 is an idiot. Take 2 months off and then train for 1 and tell me if you PR. You must not have seen his cross season. Big ten champ and 11th at nationals (10K). Not bad for someone who everyone thought was just a middle distance track runner and couldn't run cross, esspecialy 10K. By the way I'll check back in 3 moths for that PR of your's
ha ha
I've gone from 4 minutes to 5 minutes and I didn't any coaching.
It looks like you didn't any english class either.
