what are some great indicator workouts or tempo runs for a sub 65 min half marathon. I am getting ready for a half this spring and want to get some input on workouts. thanks

I'm interested as well...
Sounds like a pipe dream if you need to ask LR Board for advice. However, here are some thoughts. You should probably be running about 10-15% of your weekly mileage at that pace or faster (sub 5min/mi), whether in the form of tempo runs, mile repeats, 1k repeats, etc. Keep your rest short on repeats, something like 5-6x1mi with 90sec recovery at 10K race pace or 10-15sec/mi faster than 1/2mar pace. Long runs should be 2 hours, total volume of 75mi/wk minimum.
Check out McMillan's pace calculator. It is pretty helpful with interval pacing. Good luck. Let us know when you run your Half Marathon.
if you can run a 65 minute half, you probably know what to do already...
Never gonna happen
ask ryan hall he broke 65 the other day
jk i like hall
thank you... for the other D*cks i did run 66:42on raw talent and now I want to dedicate 2-3 months of serious training so I am looking for serious advice!!!
thanks
A good workout that Daniels would recommend and can both help you get better and indicate you're close to that shape would be:
4 miles in 20 minutes
4 min recovery jog
3 miles in 15 minutes
3 min jog
2 miles in 10 minutes
2 min jog
1 mile sub 5
This is a little slower than the actual pace for a 65 min half, but if you run faster with people/competition/in a race then it should be a wash. If you can, run it over the same type of terrain as your race will cover.
I should have included that these should feel fairly controlled, and then you can open up on the last mile if you like. Obviously if you're struggling through these then you can't hold it for the whole race.
Thanks... sounds like a good tough workout
I don't want to critcize you here just offer some simple adivise...i too love to see others workouts and sometimes try to copy them, but truthfully i have come to realize this is not the best way to get there.
you improve most by gradually adapting...so instead of tryign to shoot for someone else's workout - you simply need to be gradually uping what you do. 1/2 marathon power comes from aerobic strength and endurance. no individual workout is the key as you probably know - eventhough it helps mentally. I would say focus on staying consistent. Keep hitting that long run - that the real secret workout and it needs to be at an easy pace - don't strain this workout thinking you need to do it in some particular time. and i even think you should occassionally run it overly slow on purpose - which makes it harder for you (and isn't that the idea - to gradually make workouts harder).
as for your steady state - which is the 2nd most important workout - again it is not about trying to run some fast pace - it is about running a volume of miles at a pace which you can handle = think about being efficient and don't think about trying to run faster than you did on your last steady state (that is a very common mental trap most runner get into). you should finish your steady states thinking: I could have gone so much faster - and will on race day vs. thinking that was a great time trial i wonder if i can run any faster on race day.
No offense, but there is no way a slow long run is the most important workout for a guy looking to run a 65 minute half marathon. Not that he shouldn't do one, but his race is only 65 minutes (hopefully) long. I'd say things like long tempos and 5k-10k work, along with generally high volume, would be way more important than a slow 2+ hour run.
That said I completely agree regarding steady state/tempo effort. Nice paragraph on that.
Your comments are really appreciated. I know that every individual is different and adapt differently to workouts. But the main aim of this tread for me is to generate ideas about what others do so I can mix and match to find the right workouts for me.
66:42 on raw talent.
So does that mean you were running just 40 MPW or even less?
50-60 I want to get up to 80-85 this year
Adam Goucher is that you?

ive been focusing on tempo runs of 6 to 8 miles and have been holding them at 5:10-5:20, I recently ran a 10 mile progression run in 54:10 and that's all off of 20-25 miles a week, my track workouts are for example: 8x200m @ 32, 8x100m @ 16, 4x400m @ 64 all with 30 seconds rest

No you didn't!!! LOL
Shut up f*g. You have no way of knowing whether or not he ran that fast. You sound like a jealous little b**ch!
