i don't understand why people bother organizing a beer mile without following official Kingston Rules. at least make your event legit.

by this logic the only car races that are legit are nascar? NOOB
That's our beer mile here in UCD in Dublin. Was won 5.42. I cant remember what beer it was, some dodgy Polish stuff I think.
The same guys who did that video also started this site:
http://www.trackwithnotrack.com/
Unfortunately we had to take the b-mile video down
Haha, this is a great video, and I would definately love to see more of these! I have run three beer miles myself and know that this event is a beast! Everytime I get to my second beer, I'm thinking,"Fu*k, why did I agree to do this again...."
These guys in the first video did run slow, but they looked like they had a hell of a time doing it and really that's the idea. Personally I can chug a beer and I'm not a bad runner as well, so I've been able to run 8:05ish with the penalty lap for puking. I always seem to mess up, because it's a huge competition between me and my buddy and everytime one of us ends up throwing up and the other coasts to victory! Hopefully next time we do one we'll try to get a video up and hopefully one of us runs reasonablly fast (we're thinking sub 6:30 with the right strategy!)
Cheers from Canada!
first i would disagree with "Yo Haha" or whoever said bud ice is harder to chug than bud light cause the alcohol. i think the flavor makes much more of a difference. and granted the alcohol content will affect the flavor to some degree, but i don't think the diff between 4.2% or whatever bud light is and 6% or whatever bud ice is is vital.
i actually found budweiser at 5.0% to be easier to chug than coors light at 4.x% (shhh...this is sacrilege according to some) and pabst (my old personal favorite at 4.64%) just because it tasted a little better.
to answer the 4:10 miler's question, i think burping is key as well. this most recent time around i experimented with different upper body form/torso lean and that seemed to help work the gases up from the gut. i cannot burp on command and don't normally burp a lot while eating or drinking beer, but every time i run a beer mile that gas seems to want to come up naturally. i kind of contract and move my throat/esophagus to try to work up the burps. usually by 100m of the lap i've got most of the gas out.
i agree with the 4:10 miler that the alcohol is irrelevant in that no respectable beer milers get drunk DURING the race, however as mentioned above alcohol may have a small impact due to flavor characteristics it imparts that make beers tough to chug fast.
a couple of my friends engaged in 'stomach stretching' regimes in the weeks leading up to the event, progressively training themselves to chug from 1 to 3 liters of water as fast as they could. they didn't think it was worth it to chug more, and they didn't want to get into dangerous territory, as per radio contests, hyponatremia and brain swelling and all that fun stuff. some reported that it seemed to help with the beer chugging.
other of my friends would place beer cans on their doorstep and chug a couple immediately at the end of the run.
i have experimented with these training techniques and found them to be marginally useful.
i think the best is simply to combine fitness (a good base plus some speed...kind of how you'd train for a real mile) with chugging practice. oh before i forget i think beer ideal temp is slightly cool. i put mine in the freezer for about 15 minutes about an hour before the event. this was starting from room temp beer. bringing in some good fitness allows you to run 70-75 seconds without being super out of breath for the chug.
for chugging strategy, this could be a thread all by itself, but for those of us who haven't perfected the outdoorsman technique, i think the best is to force yourself to, in one breath, slam about 1/2 to 2/3 of the beer, take a break of a couple seconds to burp and recover, then slam the rest on the 2nd or 3rd breaths. this is a pretty reliable way to keep your chug time under 25-30 seconds. for the first beer you need to be able to slam it in one breath and you should be able to at least get to 15-20 seconds with some practice. the fastest i've ever done is 9 seconds but i have seen people do 3-4 seconds using the outdoorsman.
and to the irishman, i went to UCD too! just the University of California, Davis. Although I have toured UCD in Dublin when i visited Ireland a couple summers ago.
beer miling is fun and easy! (no, not really)

Gotta wonder what ole Langdon thinks about all this! You know he's read this thread
