College students are exceptionally good at figuring out how to waste time. Since there wasn't much opportunity to waste time on the computer, I did my time wasting in bars, coffee houses, playing sports, and hanging various other on and off campus places.
By the early 80's, many colleges had decent computer systems. My campus had a few mainframes and quite a large number of terminals, so I did all of my papers and a fair amount of homework on the computer. Everything was text based, so we needed to use formatting commands and we didn't see how our papers looked until we printed them.
