Yanks in 5 maybe 6 six if they feel generous. Though I find Yankee haters to be 10X more obnoxious than the most rabid Yankees fan, I really don't mind the band wagoners. I like the YANKS VS. all mentality...and from their track record (40 pennants and 26 Championships), the Yankees have aquitted themselves quite well.
So if you're rooting for anybody but the Yankees, thanks, and that's the only way we'll have it. Yankees in 2009.
PhilTHadelphia is crap. Recent surveys showed their people are the dumbest, fattest, and worst looking in all of America. Therefore, GO New York Yankees.

I was 10 in 1980. My grandparents lived in Philadelphia so I only got to go to a couple of games a year during the summer when we went up to visit. I cherish sitting along the third base line and watching Schmidt pinch hit a game winning home run in extra innings. I remember Lonnie Smith coming in as a base runner and defensvie replacement for Luzinski as a rookie in 1980 (pretty funny given his later history). I never understood why they traded Manny Trillo.
Ah, Manny Trillo. Everytime he field a ground ball, he would always pause for a few moments and then fire an underhanded 90 mile bullet to first base. Tim McCarver retired from the Phillies at the end of 1979 season. Had he stayed on one more year, he would have got his WS ring, instead he became a broadcaster.
Of course rabid Yankees fans are quieter. They are supposed to win - every year. They print their own money with YES and, in general, can buy whoever they want. Players go there because they know it is a safe chance to try to win, and they do have ownership that expects to win and demands performance (they can be idiots at times, but they play within the rules they are given and I do respect their drive).
Every year the Yankees don't win is an embarrassment because they should win with every advantage they have. That is why it is SO GREAT when they DON'T WIN.
GO PHILS!

Two of the most obnoxious fan bases in all of baseball. Unfortunately the Yankees are going to own the Phils. National League fans don't realize just how good the Yanks are this year.

As a New Englander, I can tell you that THE most annoying fans are Yankee fans. There is actually a sub-group of Yankee fans, that real Yankee fans hate; they are called "October Yankee fans"
Yankees in 6.

What advantage do the Yankees have? They have the same opportunity to sell tickets and merchandise, put together a cable network and sell advertising, etc., as every other team. They're just better at it.
The Yankees' fans support the team. The team, unlike many others, invests this revenue in the on-field product. The fans respond by continuing and increasing their support. And the cycle continues. Successful businesses improve their product to drive revenues. And, in MLB, they're rewarded for their success by getting to put luxury-tax money in the pockets of their less-motivated competitors.

I agree 100%. I'd be just as happy if neither team ever wins, and Selig gets to explain why scheduling World Series games in November was a good idea. It's ridiculous to play a 162-game schedule in order to qualify for the quarter finals of a playoff tournament that takes another month to complete.
You didn't really dispute my claim that they have advantages, you just explained why they have them.
Like it or not, I have to admit there is no market in America that compares to NY, so no, other teams do not have an equal opportunity.
Unfortunately baseball's rules allow for unequal competition. George and co. have done a very good job of taking advantage of that. But in sports we are supposed to want "level playing fields" and when they don't occur, it is nice to see the underdog knock off the favorite.
Wow. You're getting on people for not knowing the 3rd base coach or the play by play anouncers.
I'll admit I know the playoff teams better than the others.
The season is too long and I will usually take notice in August when there are still 50+ games left. If they are not in the hunt I don't get into the details and there used to only be two teams per league that made the playoffs. Plus it's Eagles time.
I know the 1980 Phillies team a lot better than 83 and 93 for some reason. Not because they won but I just followed it more closely when I was 10.
This team I know well. They don't change the line up at all.
Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Werth, Ibanez ,Feliz, Ruiz, pitcher- every time.
And now we know Pedro is starting Game 2.

oh come on, are you really going to pull that? I know the playing field is so unlevel, the highest paid team is playing the team with the 7th highest payroll. I do not like either team, but that is the excuse all Phillies' fans have been using so far.
the third base coach nick leyva was the phillies manager for a couple years just before the 93 world series team.
the guy had no clue who he even was and he claimed to be the biggest fan and one who watched every game since he was little. this was after i asked him why he was trying so hard to get tickets to a game this year that was sold out.

Eagles Time?? are you kidding me? The eagles may be the going away favorite in terms of sports teams in Philly, but the entire city is being consumed by the world series. Forget the eagles for a few weeks, the city is trying to win another world series.
Eagles time...you have to be kidding me. Every sports team takes a back seat to the team that is in the championship game, that's how it always is. You must not be from Philadelphia.
OK, so they are both near the top of the payroll list.
The Yankees payroll is about 25% more than the second highest payroll. The Phil's payroll is about 56% of the Yanks. That doesn't even take into account scouting staffs, minor league teams and the ability to buy undrafted foreign players. If that doesn't describe an "advantage" then the word should be removed from the dicitionary.
And personally, I never used it as an excuse. I simply said it is why Yankees fan should be quiet and why I'll be that much happier when the Phils win.

They really didn't vary their line-up much at all. I still know all the position players. I think I could get the batting order right (or at least close). I get a pretty muddled on the pitching, though. Carlton was #1, best I remember Dick Ruthven was #2 and Larry Christianson #3? I think they used a 3 man rotation in the playoffs. Don't remember any of the relief pitches except for McGraw.

REALLY-classier???? Did you read the NY Times. Now that's class!
how can you guys forget dickie noles? knocked down george brett to swing the series!
and again, just for the record, the bulk of this thread is what sports talk should be. just honest, fun discussions. no insults, nobody sucks. this is going to be a fun series

So when the Phils play the Marlins, you root for Florida right? After all, their payroll is just 1/3 of Philadelphia's.
