WEEEELLLL, kinda complicated, but here goes. The short answer is there is no "lead distance" coach. As you can see from a quick scan of the website, UCLA is a split program and that they "share" coaches. This doesn't seem to be the clear case with the distance events. It is pretty obvious that Braden was the selection by the new men's head coach and Gray was the pick by the women's coach. Of course you would think that would mean that Gray has the women, and Braden has the men. Now, where their specific duties lie is anyone's guess. Of course Gray has an absolute wealth of middle distance knowledge. There is no doubt that in the 800m-1500m area, he can get it done. Braden as is evident by his still developing running career, is a distance specialist and could probably hold his own coaching anything from 3k-10k. This is the cross season, so they are probably sharing the work load as they both adjust to the new surroundings. Now, where it pans out after a year or two will be anyone's guess.
