Exactly. Another Head Coach bows to the quota god. I wouldn't mind it if you could actually find a Head Coach that has hired a young female without experience that BELIEVED the drivel they post in these press releases, but you KNOW they would have preferred a more experienced coach, without regard to gender, and some will even admit to as much behind closed doors. It would be comical if it wasn't so sad that AD's are flat out giving these Head Coaches an edict that has gender as the primary requirement for the position.
I don't think every hire of a female can be lumped into the same category of "quota hire." First of all, there are some very accomplished women ranging from Karen Harvey to Juli Henner to Barb Crousen. They all have to start somewhere, and maybe some of these coaches actually believe a young lady has the makings of a great coach. There are plenty of men that are hired on at their school or a conference rival after they graduate.
Secondly, I have met many extremely talented female assistants at the DIII level who would desperately love to move up, but are never even granted interviews for these positions. Some of them have coached athletes who are performing at a level higher than those at the DI institutions they are applying to. If all the admins are looking for is a quota, why not hire a woman who has coached multiple D3 all-americans?
Although I prefer that everyone has to work hard and climb the ladder, there are intangibles that a young woman brings. A male coach may prefer having a young, female assistant so his athletes will talk to her about boyfriends, eating disorders, and periods and leave him to worry about training. Most good distance women are not great leaders, so he may hope that an assistant can be almost a team captain and keep the women focused by being a good role model, especially if she was a high level runner. You are also underestimating the value that having an elite woman on staff can add to recruiting. Lots of girls only want to go somewhere where there is a female on staff, and sometimes the parents require it. If the woman is a runner that the girl admires, it is even more of a recruiting tool. Coaching is not all about X's and O's and often times the best coaches are those that have the intangibles. Besides, if the head coach and assistant are coaching the same events, the head coach should know enough already, and the assistant is there to help with those other things and with administrative stuff.
After playing devil's advocate, I must admit, I HATE it when athletes straight out of college get hired for a job that really good coaches got passed over for.
You bring up some great points. Can anyone come up with a list of the most talented D-III female assistant coaches who should be considered for D-I positions? I think the main problem is simply a lack of information on these coaches from the D-1 level. That is an interesting idea for a website: "The best unknown coaches in America".
What has Henner done other than make Chris Lukezic an average 4:00-miler? Air Force is going nowehere.
I feel like all DI coaches should just hire an elite distance girl out of college to be friends with the girls. They really need a friend most importantly to talk to about their boyfriends.

Caster Semenya, is that you?
It doesn't matter what your gender is, your chances of getting hired to D1 from D3 are pretty remote. You actually have a better chance of being hired from high school than from D3-especially if you have coached several elite hs level athletes.
Word is that UNI is beginning the interview process...anyone have a clue who the candidates are?

Yes, this is very true. I am retired from college coaching now, but probably one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given was from a very established D-I coach that was helping me get into the biz. I was desperate to just land any college gig. I saw D-III jobs and wanted to go for anything. His advice was that if I wanted to coach at the D-I level, stay away from the D-III jobs. Head coaches that do the hiring tend to pigeon hole you and view you as a D-III coach if that is where you have been coaching. It's not fair, especially if you are successful, but for the most part that is how it is and what I saw after watching many hires. It goes for D-II, NAIA, & JUCO. I'm not saying division jumps don't happen, but they are the exception from what I witnessed.
What about NAU???
NAU named their distance coach Heins the interim head coach.

Boise State's new head coach Hardy hired an old friend (?) to be the jumps coach - Petersmeyer. Who is handling the throws, now that Maynard is gone? Is Chris Huffins still on staff?

Would Bethune-Cookman hire a coach who is not African American into the head position?

There are athletic coaches at Bethune-Cookman who are not African American.
Speaking of DIII to DI jumps...didn't Petersmeyer (new Boise coach) come from the DIII ranks?
Jeff was an exceptional D3 athlete who went into D1 coaching right away. He did a coaching stint at his alma mater Baldwin-Wallace, but then went right back to D1. He is an exceptional jumps/hurdles coach and that is a valuable commodity in any division.

Who coached Lukezic to 3:33, jack-ass
Word on the street is that the NAU coach took the Boise state job. Heard it from a pretty good source too. They should be moving up there soon. Any one hear any thing on the Central Michigan job?

Central Michigan hired Glenn Smith (formerly Tulane) to replace Petersmyer.
Brad Bowman former TCU coach to Tulane or Oklahoma.
