You bumped an old thread to post a video that most have seen dozens of times?
Michael Newman, York Class of 79, has a blog on his facebook entitled Put Your Hand On Seven, A Journey To The State Championship (1978). He wrote this 2 years ago - great read. Takes place a generation before Sage. Newman describes what they where doing and how they were doing it. Figure it out and as in every written account see if there is anything to read between the lines.
I remember watching Kyle Alcorn run a 55 last lap to win California 3200m in like 2002? Was amazing. He came back the next year and ran a 53 last lap to finish second to Tim Nelson. I’m not sure if anyone can find those but they’re incredible.

Don't know....but because of your bump, I read this thread that started 11 years ago.
Interesting all the angles covered 11 years ago as to what happened to Don Sage.
What happened to Ron Craker of York, Dan Gilchrist of Rockford, and Ron Wartgow of Belvidere?
One explanation was the NCAA loophole that allowed recruiting of physically mature (African) runners.
1. Track needs a 3K race (other than steeple).
2. Too many potentially great runners are lost in the transition from HS to intenational track because of being forced to the 5K against international runners, before they are 22 years or older. Add 3K to the NCAA championships, national champs, Olympics and World Champs.
2. Also, 10K is a big jump from the 5K for HS runners.
Div III standard of 8K seems wise for developing the men's CC runners once in college.
Perhaps 6K CC for NCAA women is even wiser, so that the men's CC races should be 6K.
Finally, no amount of working out can ensure a HS star can become an international star runner. Whatever they did that seemed so amazing in HS may not be enough to cut it.
He morphed into Donald Trump Jr?
