I think Paula (and Uta, in Boston that one year) was on the rag when that happened. She had cramping which upset her g.i. tract. Probably tough to control, at least in acute cases.

Yes, she puked twice at least that I saw
I didn't see that, but I did see the Men's Silver medalist puking a lot. I think that some runners mix their drinks with too high a carb concentration, the stomach just can't absorb it late in the race and it comes back up. And why do so many elite runners take a carb drink at the 40k mark????
Good point. Dehydration affects performance way before loss of carbs. You can even sort of guts through low glycogen, but dehydration kills. AlSal said they might go with plain water next time. Why doesn't he have this figured out? I think Goucher put her faith in him and he fell through. I'm a big fan of his, but this was all on him. This is not the first time she has had this problem and it should have been fixed. The same thing happened in NY. Too much sugar/carbs in the fluids, puking, and dehydration.
Go Kara.
She wasn't crying because it wasn't a big meet like The Cup.
I think that some coaches mistakenly believe that the carb/water ratio should increase during the race, this is just wrong, it should decrease to avoid the dehyration issue. I don't know if this was Kara's problem, but I'm preety sure it was for the second Kenyan man.

If your puking your fluids in a marathon you have no chance of running well. It's not like toughing out a 1500.
Really? I guess Bob Kempainen didn't get that memo during the 1996 Oly Trials marathon.

Well I guess that's the rule and not the exception then rigth? ;-)
