It is a crappy situation if this is what happened. I didn't see it so I don't know exactly how it went down. But as another poster said, there is a recall guy with a gun out there. They could have called it back. You can't call back the race when it's done.

"could have"

Did the officials screw up and lead the outside section in too soon or did the lead women from the outside section break too early and everyone followed? If the officials f***ed up then yes, it stands or you do a rerun. If the girls f***ed up, they should be disqualified. If half the top field in a road race cut the course because of their own ignorance, they wouldn't let the result stand.
They won't DQ all those girls, they can't

says who???
the rulebook says they can
Why not?
DQ is a must... it does not make sense not to follow the rules set.
As for Defar, she was not upto it. The Ethiopian team missed Tirunesh.
it looks like the first woman on the outside started running in the outside of lane 3 from the gun, and most of the others started running a little bit inside with her. then when the women from the inside caught up to them, they all just blended

Even if they did cut 10 meters short, this is a case where common sense needs to prevail. It had no affect on the final outcome of the race.
This would be like calling a kid out after he hits a home run and his teammates pat him on the back while he is rounding the bases because you are not allowed to "aid the base runner."
NBC reported that defar got 3rd .... good fight
there could still be appeals right?
does anyone know where the divide on the start list was? just so we know who it was.
coaches (countries) have 30 minutes to file a protest. I also saw the Jamaica runner in the IH not go over the hurdle with his trail leg. It will be interesting to see if he is DQ'ed. He is a medal favorite.
What if the race had been won in a world record and the winner was one of those who cut in too soon?
Says the threat of making a joke of the sport by doing so as well as the threat of lawsuits brought by the agents of DQed runners. Officials should have put out cones around the curve to separate the alleys, they'll have to eat this error. It really has zero impact on the outcome of the race if some of the runners ran 10m less than others, it's straight-up moronic to suggest otherwise.

so what if the men on the outside do the same thing tomorrow to get good positioning?
if there was no danger of precedent, i'd say sure, let the results stand, but this is basically saying that the rules don't matter.
