I remember making a compromise with my dad when I went to college. I wanted to be a history major, he told me that he'd pay for everything if I'd get another major in business. He didn't tell me not to major in History, but told me he wanted me to major in something that was marketable to the general employer.
He was right.
As much as I hated to admit it at the time...he was right.
I came out of school with a double major in Business and in History; and got employed nearly right away (in a bad economy). I'm still with the company that hired me, and am well up the food chain...enjoy the job, the company, and its products. I guess I'm lucky, but without the Business degree, I wouldn't be here.
And I still use my history degree as well...writing, researching, etc. Got an MBA later on.
