Even though they ran the exact same way, I think that Forrest ran smart and Chelanga ran stupid. Forrest was a 3rd place guy from the beginning, and his only hope of scoring better was to run hard and up at the front no matter what. If he'd gone out more conservatively behind Rupp and Chelanga, there was no way he was going to work his way up later without crazy kick-killing effort. Chelanga was the NCAA record holder in the event and even if he couldn't have gone with Rupp in any circumstance, it's obvious that trying to go out hard and break Rupp at the beginning hasn't worked for him in the last 3 championships he's lost. He obviously has the times to challenge Rupp, so why continue going for a losing strategy?
