The earliest grammatical error is "is" for "are" in "The threads[...]is always[...]." What do I win?

He sure can talk the talk when he's on the other side of the world, after he spent all of indoor avoiding Rupp. If he really thought he could have run with Rupp in XC, he would've jumped into Rupp's 7:44 3k, or 13:18 5k, or Indoor Nationals. Who's he fooling? The fastest he's ever run in his life is away from a starting line with Rupp.
I told you he'd get hurt
I think German will always use pain/injuries as an excuse when he goes up against tougher competition. He will only run his best when he knows he is better than his competitors. He will not rise to the occasion and become a champion of anything big.
I was there, German was in third at the head of the pack at one point. He looked calm. Not bad after starting at like 80th at 300 meters.
CE, you've won! Unfortunately you DON'T get back the 3 minutes it took to read my ramblings. I apologize, but keep up the great work!
I will, I promise. No time was lost in reading your posts--they're a pleasant clearing in a forest of cacti and poison ivy.
Don't underestimate GF in his catching Rupp and Sam statement!
I was not at the NCAA XC race, but from the video, he did not look stressed when he started moving up. While I don't think he could have won that race because I think Rupp and Sam may have slowed down a little over the last 2k becasue they were foucsing on each other and not the pelaton. But, I don't think he would have had a problem getting that third spot.
Btw, GF had been looking great all XC season; he appeared to have a very controlled win at Jr Nats XC and history will probably show that his 11th at World Cross is not trival. World cross has become insanely competitive, Rupp/Med/Hall and Ritz would have struggled to run with that lead packon that course. I guarantee you that a couple of those guys will run sub-13 5Ks this summer. In Africa, the top Jrs are almost as good as the seniors, in fact, some of those Jrs have beaten many of the top guys in the senior race.
How much did German beat Derrick by at Jr. worlds? 7 seconds.
11 270 German Fernandez USA 24:13 +0:47
12 24 Dieudonné Nsengiyuma BDI 24:16 +0:50
13 157 Charles Kibet Chepkurui KEN 24:17 +0:51
14 64 Goitom Kifle ERI 24:18 +0:52
15 268 Chris Derrick USA 24:20 +0:54
NCAA cross country was a meet that every cross country runner was peaking for, all you can say is he MAY have gotten 3rd. Derrick was 7th.
Jr. Worlds is in the middle of seasons and Derrick was coming off a big double at NCAA indoors. Luke more than likely ran it because he qualified, but with out any sense of aiming specifically for it.
All we know is German supposedly put more emphasis than Derrick did on aiming for Jr. worlds (skipping indoor NCAA's) but went out slightly more conservative and finished slightly in front of him. I'm not so convinced that he would have had the 3rd spot at NCAA cross no matter how he looked.
Regarding Rupp struggling to run with the lead pack of the Jrs, while it might not have been a cake walk the race took off from the beginning and the winner was :54 seconds ahead of Derrick over 8K.
For reference Rupp opened cross at Pac-10's last year with this margin:
1 Galen Rupp Oregon 22:55.14 1 2 Luke Puskedra Oregon 23:32.11 2 3 Chris Derrick Stanford 23:38.17 3
Then in his second cross race of the season at regionals:
1 Rupp, Galen Oregon 27:41.24 1
2 Kiptoo-Biwott, Shadrack Oregon 28:32.31 2
3 Kipchumba, Alfred Portland 28:36.02 3
4 Kinsella, David Portland 28:43.88 4
5 Derrick, Chris Stanford 28:44.31 5
6 Puskedra, Luke Oregon 28:45.48 6
I think with this margin over Luke and Chris, Rupp would certainly have been in the mix of those top guys at world jrs. How many of those guys do you actually think are capable of 13:00 AND 27:00 this summer?

Wouldn't Luke, who finished 4th at NCAA's be a better comparison? So German beat the guy who finished 4th in NCAA's by 40 seconds. You loose.
lose.
HE WAS ALSO RUNNING ON A STRESS REACTION, GOOD JOB LEAVING THAT OUT.

Two things:
1) Luke was not 4th at NCAA's he was 5th.
2) Why would you? Derrick opened his indoor season earlier than Luke and with a 13:44. He obviously had a more serious winter racing campaign going so he would be better to compare with Fernandez, who got going even earlier and was focussing on JR. Worlds.
Watch what happens with look next fall when he focuses on cross country again.

Footlocker - Slipper surface, bad shoes?
NCAA XC - Tendon injury
NCAA Indoors - Too busy with school/focussing on world jr x-c
World JR XC - Stress Reaction
For comparison
Chris Derrick
Footlocker - 2nd
NCAA XC - 7th
NCAA Indoors - Double All American
World JR XC - 15th (Anyone pick him for better than that?)

Yes. I see that you are comparing him to a great runner whome he beat at world XC. Great strategy.

Can't wait to bump this.

This is something I left out of my earlier post. He was running with less pressure at World XC because of his stress reaction. If he had bombed out it would have been fine because he was 'injured'. The bottom line is you don't race if you are not fit or are injured so to run world xc would suggest he is not as injured as seriously as people think.
It will not suprise to see German run smoething fast outdoors and then you will see the "oh shit man he just ran xx.xx after 4weeks training" etc

just to clarify, I was referring to Luke when I said that, although it may not have been clear. no reason to think luke is going to choke next fall, he was solid every race last year and had a strong winter campaign. far as I can tell a bad race for luke is pretty solid.
