Can't argue with results...unless you're on let's run...
I actually agree with most of your posts on this matter. It seems logical that Shalane is moving on to bigger (read: farther/longer) things and is taking the opportunity to move away from Cook. HOwever, I don't see a whole lot wrong with athletes world class or not receiving similar workout schedules. Many world class groupings often participate in similar track workouts (depending on competition schedule) until it becomes time to taper/focus etc. I guess I don't see a lot wrong with that with a group of talented middle/long distance runners.

I agree with a previous poster. I'm going to call her picking up Mahon. She as well as a lot of us fashion her as the 2nd coming of Deena Kastor. What better way to do this than to train with her. Her location in NC might be an issue.
I also agree. Anyway, no living situation is forever. Meb doesn't live exclusively in Mammoth and the Flanagans can live wherever the hell they want once Shalane's running-as-a-career days are finished.
For the 5th time within this thread, Ray Flynn does not represent, nor has he ever represented Shalane. Peter Stubbs was the Manager who has recently parted ways with Shalane. Just so we are all clear.
Cook was known at Mason for taking care of his athletes so all they had to focus on was performing. ALL the little details Cook took care of. The tough-guy attitude Cook displays got under his athletes skin and his athletes became the tough guy Cook exudes. That is why Cook has been so great. I always suspected that they MAY be in Mexico because any PED can be easily purchased there, but it is also a great place to train and cheap to live there, so it may be innocent. Look at the record of world-class runners at GMU who tried training on their own after Cook; most all (we're talking dozens) NEVER replicated the same success they had with Cook. Alex Morgan: 1:45.1 800 meters with Cook; 1:47 after Cook, as just one example of the many, many talented runners Cook had. Cook basically ran the athletic dept. at GMU until the new AD came in and decided the school's new focus would be basketball, so that is the main reason why Cook resigned. He was NOT fired. That said, Cook was no angel and athletes like Gregory Haughton can tell you there were money disputes with Cook. It is quite possible Cook pulled something behind Shalane's back to take more of her money, possibly through Nike or her agent. It's just ashame someone didn't warn Shalane ahead of time that this is the kind of stuff Cook has been known to do. Had she talked to some Mason grads she could have guarded herself better. Shalane, if you are reading this, and I know you are, I think you made a big mistake here. Even if you wanted to part ways with him, you shouldn't have announced to the public that this is personal. Now you are basically casting doubt on his integrity and possibly affecting his future earning potential, without even saying what your beef is with him. Isn't this called defamation of character? I suggest you clear this up to prevent yourself from gettting sued. I don't think you would have medaled if you were coached by someone else!

I guess they're also more of a visual paper, so maybe putting a picture of Shalane in there helps their case.
Hah! Right, because sports section readers would tend to be mesmerized by her trollish visage?
One thing not discussed much on this thread is Flanagan's possible move up to the marathon.
I'm all for athletes moving up to the marathon distance at a younger age. The Japanese and Kenyans do it, and recently more Americans have had success doing so (Hall, Ritz).
But I just don't see Flanagan as a marathoner, at least not for another 4-5 years. Let's not forget, she only ran her first 10,000 last year. And she got a bronze!
I know, her mom was a record holder back when 2:40-something meant something. But from what I've read, Cook's training is fairly low-mileage. It seems like you need a few years of higher mileage in your legs before tackling the 'thon.
I hope I'm wrong, and that she does take over the marathon mantle from Deena, but I just hope this isn't a ploy to cash in at New York this fall thought up by her coach/agent husband.
Nor is it ShalEne...
I remember an interview with Athletics Canada where Cook said he didn't really want her to run the 10k, and then looked like a "f---ing idiot" afterwards.
Who would have disagreed with him?

This is part of Cook's genius. If you read lots of his quotes/interviews, he does/says things to take the pressure off his athletes, or make a mistake look like his, not the athlete's.
This website is the first place I've read anything negative about Ray Flynn, professionally. I think he has a pretty solid reputation for ethics, unlike certain other agents.
who are some good coaches in north carolina?
ok bob!
any coaches in n.c.? wrote:

Not many if any at all, hopefully she doesnt get pressured or contacted by Scott Simmons or Joan Nesbit. Both would be the worst choices ever.

Flanagan wants more from a coach then just slieghly altering workouts he's e-mailing to three other runners who probably
will never see the 26 mi. distance. It's amazing these runners have achieved as much as they have with John Cook as their coach. Nike could save themselves allot of money if they would just send out Peter Coes book on middle distance training and afew sprint drills. For six figures, you would expect alittle bit more. Cook has or had the best coaching job in America.
I have read some very dumb posts on these boards.
This one quoted above definitely ranks in the top 10.
Garnett is illiterate and thus incapable of processing one iota of complexity in the insider information that he doesn't actually have.
Typical of the low level of intelligence and education in the state of North Carolina, or almost any southern state for that matter.

Most athletes at Flanagan's level - use the coach as a "sounding board".
All she needs to do is follow what she had done in the past ( it works). Hopefully she has recorded her past workouts.
Have someone hold the watch while she is doing workouts, and be around to kick her ass back to the start line to complete the workout.
She became good because she is what she is - a great athlete - she probably needed someone to believe her, listen and advise when asked.

You know a lot of people are jealous in our world, but a lot of posts over the years regarding both Cook and AlSal point the finger at them doing scrupulous things in there careers. I recall my mom, when I asked if I should give my cheating girl friend another chance replied, "once a cheater, always a cheater". Now in my adult years I feel the same way about coaches and athletes. If they cheat once, they will do it again. If they cheated in any way to gain the edge professionally then over time they will justify why it's ok to cheat at an even great level.
What does that have to do with this thread? Nothing, I'm just making a point.
Do you know the difference between scupulous and unscrupulous? Because I don't think a lot of people have accused Al Sal of doing many scrupulous things.
Oh, I forgot to add that it is well documented that Shalane's husband has been a negative influence in Cook's relationship with Shalane.
