El Gerrouj- 81.2
Alan Webb- 74.8
Ryan Hall- 78.1
Bekele-82.0
decent guess but i would say webbs is higher than a 74, hell i was over 74 and i certainly cannot run 13:xxs for a 5k, never mind 14s
VO2 max does not measure how fast your run....
I run 15:43 and I have an 81.9
Pre had ran 13:15 and has an 82
And I had my highest V02 measurement (72.X)racewalking. Improving your max V02 is important. Comparing your value to the guy next to you on the starting line is useless.
vo2max is good measurement to indicate potential ability. better indicators of actual running performance would be vVO2 or velocity at lactate threshold.
lance armstrong and bekele might have similar max vo2's but bekele's vVO2 might be 4:00/mile while armstrong might be 5:00/mile.
Salazar's VOz max was something like 72 - roughly 10-12 ml/kg2 on average lower than top distance runners
What's the difference between VO2 max and vVO2? Also, is VO2 max static or can you improve it by training?
vVO2 max is the velocity at which you achieve VO2 max, usually very close to 3k pace. vVO2 max can be improved by improving running economy or VO2max. VO2max can be improved by increasing mileage until you reach aprox 80mpw, after that phys studies show that increased mileage doesn't help much. You can also increase it by doing intervals where you get your body to VO2 max. usually 3k-5k pace intervals with rest intervals equal to or shorter than the previous pace interval. Although, if you do short enough rest and enough intervals 10k pace could work too or mile pace w/ longer rest. The longer you can get your body to spend at VO2 max the better, 3k-5k pace gets you there quickly and allows a good number of intervals at that intensity (see Daniels, Horwill, Coe, etc.).
