College Heights Christian School, one of the smaller schools in Missouri, scored a 16 at the state meet in 2007 with their runners only running 5 to 6 days a week and never running more than 30 miles. They mainly do tempo work and longer intervals.
Potosi High School in Missouri scored a 16 in 2006 with their runners running a six week peak of 90 miles heading into the first day of actual practice.
So which method is best? College Heights average time was around 17:15 on the Missouri course, which is a very, very tough championship course.
Potosi's average time was 16:00 flat, again on a very hilly course.
The argument for only running 50 miles per week might work if you happen to have future NCAA champions on your team, but for the team with average Joes, the higher mileage programs tend to bring out the best in the individual.
