the bump is an implant that records the heart rate only. his heart beats very fast on occasions for short periods of time. not sure when he last had this problem. To get some sort of corrective electric shock you need a pacemaker for when the heart goes slow/stops or ICD for when its going too fast. not many athletes are competing with one of those things for obvious reasons.

Sorry, even if Andy was able to decide how fast his heart should be beating during his race, as you\'re suggesting, what would be the benefit?

Can you explain why you think this fictitous situation would be an advantage; why do you think an athletes body is not capable of deciding how fast the heart needs to beat under given circumstances?

All I can think is that turning your heart up a notch before an 800 might mean you wouldn\'t need to do so much of a warm up, but thats about it.

Under what legal system is knowing how fast your heart is beating illegal? Andy is British and subject to British Law, I can assure you such knowledge is not illegal under British Statute Law.

Baddeley is an all round excellent man.

He has a first class degree from Cambridge University as well as a very pleasant and sporting personality. He hasn't got anything to prove. He doesn't have to worry about making fast bucks before his career ends at age 30. He runs because he loves it.

I was shocked as I saw him charging down the stretch. I had no idea who he was but I was more excited than he seemed.

I don't know Baddeley well but when I've met him he's come across as very nice guy. Despite being a world class runner and a brilliant student there's not a trace of arrogance in him. Once a friend and I bumped into him at road race and started chatting. My friend didn't realise who he was and asked what sort of running he did, and all he would modestly say was that he was more of a track runner. It was up to me to add he was ranked number one in the country.

I'm afraid you're are seriously making yourself sound just like an "ass". Since when have dopers looked guilty after winning a race anyway? I don't particularly recall Montgomery, Chambers or Marion Jones looking overcome with guilt after a victory.
