"Ok, so now you are using Canova as an authority. I pay respect to Canova because he knows what he is doing within his own sphere of thinking. His knowledge is solid but not inspired. I had never heard of him until letsrun. His authority is besides the point anyway.
Canova uses the reasons that now there is a double periodised year for competing. Here is his first mistake. Competitions are should be considered secondary to training.
Canova says the new system of training is based on high intensity. This is his second mistake. High intensity training cannot exist without low intensity training for very long. Balance must always be observed. Canova is lucky. He coaches one of the few population groups that have a naturally high base aerobic capacity. This area can be neglected for longer in such athletes before negative repercussions are noticed.
Canova says the new frontier of methodolody is to use many periods of specific training with a strong modulation. This is his third mistake even though it is a very good idea and can be used to develop specific weaknesses beyond the aerobic. It is a mistake if it exists without some form of steadier training occurring as an undercurrent, as a platform, as support to use Canova's own lingo.
Canova's fourth mistake is he is not aware of the technical aspects of running. He is again lucky with the natural postures of the population groups he works with as they require less correction to the ideal than most Westerners. Because he works with such athletes this mistake does not have that strong a negative effect. The effect his lack of technical understanding has is that he puts bounding into the middle of a 500m repetition. A poor replacement for uphill springy bounding IMO. I'm sure Canova has read the Lydiard Schedule in detail and taken what he wanted from it.
Canova likes to complicate and for that reason appeals to those that like things complicated. Lydiard has reduced the exact same stuff as Canova to a much simpler level. For that reasons Lydiard likes people who like things simplified."
