Big news out of Illinois!
Big news out of Illinois!
so i guess the guy from the front page can run the mile instead now? he would have regretted it otherwise. he can smash the state record.
Wow, Paula Radcliffe and Chris Derrick both getting devastating news keeping them out.
Chris, I know you will recover and have an amazing career collegiate career at Stanford. I know it's hard but try to keep your head up and pull through. Look to the future and don't let this hold you back.
Best of Luck
potatoes?
And in and Olympic year too.
god damn, it's such a shame
I honestly thought he could get in reach of that seemingly unbreakable 2-mile record.
First Fout and now Derrick... the top 2 runners gone now. What's next? Fernandez with a stress fracture?
I really thought Chris was capable of getting the 2 Mile National Record. Especially with good competition at NON. I guess we will just have to wonder what it could have been...
Some damn ho had to go screw it all up. Maybe next time the BI's can keep there hands off of Der-lic.
just found out that he was set to run the 2 mile at the pre classic. That would have been a great race to watch as he assaulted nelson's record. Sadly now we will never know.
Chris must want to kill himself right about now. Missing out on a possible State title, National title and 2-mile state and national record.
Mono is a label that doctors use when patients say they feel tired. Derrick could very well be suffering from anemia and/or any one of a number of syndromes associated with extended hard training and racing for which MDs do not have a handy label. The bottom line is the same: he should get some rest and take a break. There are no effective medications for "mono" anyway.
Thanks for the update

wow.that would have been some trip....going just to watch some guy get DFL. did you know there are some other (just marginally better!) athletes running also?
I am going to guess that he will pretty much forget about this the day he steps onto the Stanford campus and realizes what he has ahead of him.
He must feel like sh!t wrote:

Mono is easily diagnosed using standard laboratory testing (ie, mono spot), so it is NOT a diagnosis that doctors use when someone is tired. If he's been diagnosed with mono, guess what? He really has it.
Thank you greenliner. You beat me to the punch. Mono is mono, not just fatigue.
There is some real concern here people. Derrick has really "pushed the envelope" the past year and a half or so. He was by no means a prodigy as a fresh and soph(kind of like Withrow). They both understood that to reach the top level, the highest level of training would be required because they werent naturals. For some people there is a price to be paid(Withrow has done good but hasn't PR'd in ages-did just run a nice 1st track 10k evidence of his abilities if healthy), others(Lowe/Puskedra etc) have managed to stay healthy. With all do respect to Derrick, who I might add, has earned his standing thru hard work and determination, had a system that couldnt take all the workload required. I truly hope he recovers from mono because some never do, that's how serious this virus is.

The mono spot test checks for antibodies to the Epstein Barr virus. Since just about everybody develops these antibodies, yes, mono is easily diagnosed. Since there are no recognized medications to prescribe, the diagnosis can't be shown to be right or wrong by their effectiveness or lack thereof.

Yes, because we all know that mono is caused by high mileage, hard workouts, and racing too fast. We also know that mono is VERY serious and it'll basically end your running career. Good thing none of us have ever had mono!

Psh. Mono sucks, but he'll be better in a couple weeks. Get well soon, Chris!
Hmm lets see, if im not mistaken a very very high degree of athletes(particularly runners) do in fact get mono as a result of hard work(everyone responds differently to stress-some are more prone to catch things than others), because it lowers your immune system. but i guess being in my second year of medical school by no means makes me an expert on this subject. basically im just guessing.
